The Pioneer115D has a good reputation and reliability for it's powerful long open can diode.

Well if it helps any.. I just opened 2 diffrent Pioneer drives. Both of them have 5.6m can diodes. I didn't put the diodes out of them but I did look at them. I updated my computer and didn't want to scrap the drive. The both look almost the same inside.
The drives are......

Pioneer DVR-111DBK IDE 16x (don't know if I want to ebay it or harvest the diode)
and
Pioneer DVR-215DBK SATA 20x

I also have a Sony 20X DVD +/- RW DL Burner AD-7200A, BUT selling it because it have the flat diode in it.

So just a little thought, when looking for drives.........

I'm using the LG 22X in my build. It has the nice open can long die diode, running at 400ma.

Pain to get out of the heatsink though. Patience is a must.

If you want the whole drive, I would go for LG, Sony or Pioneer.
Sony-NEC-Optiarc, Samsung, Lite-on and NEC have useless or weaker diodes.
Somehow I've never heard of anyone extracting HP or Asus diodes. Maybe because they are also bad?

In my experience, the Sony DRU's are very hard to extract, and LG is medium difficult. I've heard, but not verified that Sony 115D is extremely easy to extract.

There is also the possibility to get the pickups for the drives. Someone is selling them right now on the forum and they are probably cheaper than whole drives.

[I just wrote this in another thread to another member]
For good drivers, keep a look our for these names: rckstr, DDL or drlava drivers (am I forgetting one?). Never believe those videos or sites that say it will work directly o n 2 AA batteries, or with just a resistor and/or capacitor. (even if they show proof that it works, they are just lucky)

Look around in the Experiments & Modifications section of the forum for these kinds of things.

I have a batch of 16x NEC burners lying around, which i got from ebay, marked as "unknown condition" pretty cheap.
Their diodes aren´t useless or weaker than others and they are particulary easy to extract.

Non-functional or unknown units are usually a great, cheap source of diodes. I use them all the time. Rarely is the problem a burned out diode. There are MANY other more sensitive parts to go bad in a DVD drive.

Peace,
dave
