Im looking for one of the best diodes i can get.

I need to build something with an immense amount of output power (like 1/4 watt or more!) that I can press into an Aixiz housing. What are some of the best priced high output red diodes that I can get fairly easily?

oh and also, I really don’t want to be pushing the limit of the diode, I’m looking for something strong that can output 250mw or more without passing 75% of the diodes theoretical max. If there’s anything like that.

But if there are no diodes that strong, what are my options?

I think I recall reading here somewhere that the 22x long open can diodes can
push that kind of power.

a 22x long die open can in a Meredith module set at 450mA can give you over 330mW. In an AixiZ module with glass optics, you will get around 310mW.

whow! 310mW!!!! ;D

What 22x drive do you recomend i rip one out of?

oh and BTW, if i point the beam straight up, how far away should i be able to still see the beam (e.g. star pointing)?

How hard is it to harvest that diode? Are there special precautions that need to be taken when removing an open can type?

Do not damage the wires, and be sure to be extra careful when extracting from the heatsink. Not very hard though... You can use 2 pliers to twist the heatsink until the diode falls out.

Or... you can buy one pre-harvested from TheMonk.
When you are done with the build, you will want to use a heatsink.

BE CAREFUL harvesting and inserting to your module. I broke 3 of them somewhere in that process! I found twisting the heatsink on these LGs can damage the diode. I bent the curved side of the open can into one of the posts (where the little wires connect). I did the same thing when my clamp was at a little bit of an angle while pushing it into a meredith module. The 3rd one looks fine, but also is just a diode.
4th time was a charm, tho!! (ive built several other reds, and never had trouble.. dono what the deal was w/ these 22x lg's. maybe just bad luck)

I found getting a very fine tooth saw blade and sawing notches into the thin sides of the LG heatsink makes it very easy to break apart. I sawed down to right at the level of the diode.

If you have a good sharp pair of wire nippers you should be able to use
them to cut the heatsink. That is what I used harvesting the diode from a
LiteOn drive. The nippers will actually expand the heatsink away from the
diode as you cut it. Just be extra carefull you don't get a piece of the diode.

Although the long die open can diode can produce an impressive amount of power, its wavelength is in the 660nm range, which is 3-2x DIMMER to our eyes than 640nm red laser light.
Also, these long die open can diodes can be pushed hard but are only technically rated for 150mW CW.

There is a group buy going on for 150mW CW red diode lasers at a 640nm wavelength which can probably be pushed to at least 200mW CW, giving you the same brightness of a 400-500mW 660nm diode.

If i got this right they are £117 GBP each, so $215.51 USD!!!

Right?

Yep...
You can get a 22x open can for $20... ::)

Can't beat that price for the sheer burning power.
Can't wait to get my 420ma Monster done !!

Re: Im looking for one of the best diodes i can ge

do you think if you un-focus it (making dot bigger) it would clearly make a large bright area on a low storm cloud?

and not that im irresposible.

but if there was a house 250m away, could i focus the dot so that every room was lit up brghtly with red?
becuase that would be extremely cool.

sorry for asking a kinda non-relevant question in your thread.
