What is a good circuit diagram or tut on making one? I don't want to burn out a diode with direct battery to diode.

And is it possible to remove only the dvd burner laser without messing the cd drive up? Like still use it in a computer only for reading. (not writing anymore)

I have a DVD Multi Recorder 16x Read 8x Write I believe. Is there anyway to guess at how much mW that would output?

The Daedal's circuit (LM317 based) is good to make your frist laser...
Else buy a FlexDrive from drLava or anoter driver from http://www.stonetek.org/shop ;)

In theory ou can extract only the red diode from your burner (DVD diode) but I think that the writer will doesn't work more later.

The diode that you have quoted is low powered. I think that it can output 50 or 60 mW max.
You can buy a diode of Sony 16X burner (SLD1239JL-54) from StoneTek.

Happy lasering

gregario87 hit most of the points..
A few more I would like to cover:
1. If you make ANY laser over 30mW, you need goggles. No exceptions!
2. You should check out the Buy/Sell/Trade section for drivers. A few key ones are the Lavadrive, and the Microdriver. The easiest DIY driver would be the DDL driver, using the LM317T as gregorio87 stated.

I currently do not have goggles. But If I find out I can actually do this, I will get some before I use the laser.

BTW, Where could I find the circuit of this? I think I have the LM317 chip and I have some resistors etc.

Excuse me for bumping and double posting. I didn't really see the point in posting another thread as it's the same subject.

That circuit looks pretty simple. And I may try buying the parts for it. I have a question about the LM317T.

I see that it puts out a very steady current for the diode. Well I have a chip already. Not the LM317T, but a 7805CT. It's a voltage regulator that puts out a steady 5v. Would this be good or bad for the diode?

It's a 3 pin chip with a heat sink. (looks like the LM317T)

well if it is going to but out 5v as a output to yor diode then your laser could blow out i may be rong becouse i only used that 7805ct ones.

i would just use the lm317t and use a 10ohm resistor, capaciter 35v 47uf, and a diode for reverse plioredy (may be spelt rong) and that should give you 150ma for a 16x diode now for a 20xdiode
use a 3ohm reistor that gives you 420ma the sweet spot should let your diode last long but i would yous
good heat sinks. :)
