How long will it go if you regulate the current and voltage properly and have proper cooling?

duty cycle?

I do not have a precise answer but, since they are mainly made for Pulsed current and we use them with CW I guess it's less than supposed.

Re: How long will  a 16x sony dvd burner diode la

My uess is as good as any, and I would venture off and say that at 150mA it'll probably last about 1,000 hours. At 200mA it'll be more like 200 hours. And at 250mA it'll be closer to 50 hours...

They are however specced for CW operation to some limit. The ones you salvage from a DVD burner will probably not be as good as the ones you can get from SenKat as the ones he is selling will run the full 10,000 hour life expectancy when driven at 80mW output :) (please don't quote me on that hour figure as I do not remember it exactly and I could be way off ::) It is all given in the datasheet though)

Hope that helps clear a bit of the fog :)

Re: How long will  a 16x sony dvd burner diod

Well there is one exception to all of this and that is the open can diodes. From my experience as well as others, they are the best diodes one can harvest from a DVD burner, and are also the most powerful. But they do come at the cost of having to buy the DVD burner, and I had a bear of a time getting it out. And one has to be extremely careful with them because they are open...there is nothing protecting the insides.

Personally I still recommend the GB diodes. I ordered them after I had harvested my open can diode because they are an exceptional value, they are very good burners, and of course there is no hassles with harvesting. Even when run at their specified maximum CW power of 130ma's, they will light non sharpeid safety matches almost instantly.

sorry i didnt read the previous posts so if the question was answered already
...daedal, what kinda lifetime @around 200mA would you expect with TEC cooling>?

Re: How long will  a 16x sony dvd burner diode la

it depends how well you cool it! but you'd get about the same lifetime, it's just that if you want to run it at higher powes, so the diode doesn't burn out instantly.

Yup, and no one can give a definite answer because we all push the diodes hard.., and each diode has it's own personality. Some like to throw up quicker than others.. ;D

Hehe... Nicely put Gazoo ;D

Another thing about TEC cooling is that the harder you drive the LD, the more that the wavelength tends to drift off. If you want to keep the output wavelength within spec, you'd have to keep the diode cool. :)
