Hello LPF,
I have recently found this Lite-On DVD ReWritable Drive. I have not been able to find a lot of info on this particular drive. I am wondering what i can build from it, laser wise. I know there is a red diode, but how strong? Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Model=SOHW-832S

Well is there any way to tell how strong the diodes are? Because it was given to me and I don't want to take it apart if it's not worth it.
Thanks for ur reply

I´m pretty sure you have a burning laser on that DVD. Any DVD Re-Writable requires a powerfull laser to delete data.

Feed it with 300mA and see how it reacts.

AFAIK: The Class I label means that the laser is in an enclosure and don't leak laser radiation. :thinking: :anyone:

It says class 3B on in about the lasr. I really dont know how to tell the write speed, i dont have box or anything, just the drive.

well once you harvest the diode and take a few pics we can probably identify it

if the diode is Long Open Can (long chip) = 450mA is a good current (i have done one in the past and it's still alive)
if the diode is Short Open Can (short chip) = 320mA should be good (300mA if you are paranoid :D:D) just kidding

EDIT: I just found that this drive is 8X DVD... Manufactured 2005... i guess it's even lower power than the short open can...
I don't think it's worth it unless you want to improve yourself in diode harvesting... :)
