Talking First build! Mitsubishi 638 lotsa pics :)

So this has been sitting in my signature for some time now, and i felt like now would be a great time to get this project out into the forums

lets start off with some quick stats..

The host was a C6 flashlight host from survival lasers
driver was set to 1.25A
and a Mitsubishi 500mw 638nm laser diode in a copper module from DTR
the divergence on this thing is horrendous... 4.4mrad!
total price including things like thermal paste and warning label.. $90

i didnt get any pictures of assembly, i slapped this together as best i could about 30 mins before the total solar eclipse started in my area.
i was lucky enough to nail it on my first try despite shaky hands and 3 years of pent up eclipse hype lmao

time for some pics! here we go..

figured i would use a red heatsink for a red laser. the black theme i have going is kinda emo so its nice having a bit of color on my host

heres the beam shots! i will have to add a picture of my super ghetto fog machine later

nice prism shots, thanks cousin for free prism

spot at 8 feet

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice for over a year now, its been fun and i cant wait to build me some more lasers (once i get hired thanks)

things ive learned from this:

- keep your cool, dont rush it. i slapped this together in under 10 mins because pressure from eclipse hype
- go over the steps by assembling the host a few times. during my frenzy trying to put this together, i had to resolder things multiple times which isnt fun when your hands are shaking like nuts

tell me if i missed anything!

thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed

Cheers!

edit: how do i write on the warning label? even sharpie just wipes right off... idk what to do

Nice clean C6 build, Merpie
Those Mitsubishi diodes are well known for their horrendous beam quality, but I'm sure you knew that going in.
Keep your duty cycles short to keep that bad boy alive!

If your warning label is foil, it'll be damn near impossible to keep anything on it.

Edit: I've never seen that brand of battery before, is it a 3.7V li-Ion, I can't quite make the label out, it almost looks like it says 3V?

All this time without a build eh? It's about time, and it looks great

Have you tried a regular pen on the label? I'd imagine any sort of marker would probably rub right off. BTW; a trick I use for writing postal labels, if you can manage to write anything on it try putting some transparent scotch tape after you get the writing on, it should stop it from rubbing off. Acts kinda like a varnish.

Very nice build Merpie101. Always had a soft for these c6 builds. It was mine first build. Brings back so many good memories. Enjoy your build!

I was wondering about the battery brand as well. For 50 cents, I wouldn't get my hopes up that they are very good or will last. Nice, clean build. I see you went with a compound lens (multi-element). It will help a little with divergence, but probably most by clipping the diverging axis. I have some of these myself. I set mine lower IIRC. around 1.1 amps with an output of 1+ watts with a single element aspheric lens. Congratulations on your first build.

OOPS. My mistake. The label cost you 50 cents. Still wondering about the batteries.

i dont own an lpm so i cant measure it exactly, but from dtr's pictures on his site, 1000mw is around the 1.1-1.3A range.

I loved my Oclaro 638nm/700mW... (Taps bugle)
Such a rich color red. Yeah, divergence was't great but that wavelength... she'll be missed. Take care of your beloved 638... you really won't know how precious she is until you've lost her

Great build, though. I like the look of those c6 hosts. I've got C3 flashlight host somewhere in the mail. AA size version.

Love the color of 638 nm, nice host for that diode.

I have an Oclaro 700 mw diode pushed to 936 mw out of the collimation lens in a custom MrCrouse host. The divergence is so bad it puts a red rake of light into the night sky instead of a nice single beam, but if you put a 8 X beam expander on it the divergence is better than most DPSS 532 nm pointers, even better than most single mode diodes.
