These LPC family diodes have always been cheaper and reliable, So reliable that i even used them without a driver and just a resistor, and they worked flawlessly and are still working.. not even a single diode died ..
these are just the newer ones after LPC-815's.. 826's are 20~25% more powerful than LPC-815. Now you can find a 250~275mW LPC-815 SLED for $7~$8
It is a bit cheap though its 826's..

^That's precisely the opposite of what I've experienced with LPC diodes. Every single type of open-can 660nm diode I've worked with has been very, very sensitive and easy to kill. Pretty sure I scratched my nose with my middle finger once while I was running one, and it misunderstood, said "screw you" and died.

There are also apparently LPC-836s available, that "supposedly" handle more power. I don't know if this has been tested though, or if it's a true claim.

So unless you're working under a vacuum hood I can't think of an easy way to make sure that NO air/dust enters an open-can diode.

In the case of LOC diodes I can think of a few easy ways to kill them once they are in a module:

Overcurrent

Back reflection

Insufficient cooling

Power spikes from bad/lacking driver

Pressing a diode into a module is the least of your worries with many, many types of laser diodes. It's nice to see that so many people have been spoiled by the latest seemingly indestructible multimode diodes that they've either forgotten or haven't experienced the fact that, generally speaking, laser diodes are among the most sensitive electronic devices that there are. Most singlemode diodes that I've found are still very sensitive to thermal and electrical conditions.

I've killed at least 10 LOC diodes just by placing an uncoated optic in front of them at the wrong angle. Often the optic will pass the angle of back reflection during adjustment, and only for a split second, but it is very often still enough to cause instant diode death.

I dont agree , Maybe you had some bad experience with them or you were'nt careful enough because they are cheap as hell ! XD just saying...
Anyways! I still love the red builds more than any.. and made 5 of them till now.. Just so you know i have done pretty deep research on the diode life of LPC's and Blurays 6x and 12x
I found LPC's quite reliable when powered with just a resistor as current limiter.. They do get affected by spikes, so a capacitor is added to the diode, and viola! Its up and running , overheating isnt the issue either if you are operating at just about 80~85% of the diode output capacity! I have successfully ran three LPC's with just a 3.3Ohm Resistor and a 16v 10uF capacitor at ~375mA in Aixiz (no other heatsinking) and it runs quite a long runtime unbelievably ~30minutes till overheating..
Again.. im not as experienced as most of you guys but i have my basics settled up for me!

Hey man, good for you! I'm not wishing bad luck on anyone.. I stopped screwing with LOCs about a year ago because I'm convinced that they're useless for laser shows due to their lack of visibility and their sensitivity.. but that's just my experience. If yours has been different I'm glad to hear it! I'm stuck on 635nm now..
