Where the hell did a constant voltage setup come from? Not needed - wasteful, even. Keep it simple, stupid.

well if i were to use the power suppy i decribed in my OP then you would see it puts out 12V and i wasn't sure before but i now know the lm317 can take up to 25V but im still not sure how it determines what V it puts out i know ones like the 7805 there is like a 5V fixed out put and you can adjust the current im pretty sure thats for higher current builds.
Also im not a complete retard just a little bit regarding this regulator/homemade driver (but im learning!) :) but still better than most noobs. (i also cant tell your tone w/ your lack of smileys, so it seems you are pissed but idk)

I'm not really calling anyone names; see KISS principle.

There are many threads that detail the operation of the lm317. I suggest you read through some of them and then ask questions.

yes i know, all i was wondering was how do i know what the Vout was too diode with this reg., it didn't seem like it was a hard question but i couldn't find the answer anywhere and no one gave me an answer here. so all i did was ask Eud and he gave me a simple (and very straight forward) answer so i now know. i usally dont like to be that annoying noob but i dont think it hurt him to give me the answer.
well thank you for enlightening me about the KISS principle :)

I don't KISS and tell....even if I do keep it simple, I add in a ground screw. Just cause....

EDIT: and loads of hot glue...why use a little when you can use a lot? I mean really...
