Blue means they will protect against red. The problem is you need to know the OD at the specific wavelength of your laser, as the blue dyes used vary in their absorption spectrum. Anyway the answer, unless you can find documented evidence for your goggles elsewhere, is no. Buy a pair that will protect you. Here's a link to the EP's: Eagle PairŪ 190-540nm & 800-2000nm Laser Safety Goggles

The problem however, might be the price as you stated earlier...so it might still be better to consider that red - LPC 826...

Thats great wrt antistatic and putting it all together, but that's not the problem. The problem is not being able to see the beam, not seeing where its going, what its reflecting off, in fact not being able to see if its actually working! Don't make the mistake of thinking "oh that's not bright at all, guess its not working properly" and then taking a closer look. If you want to check, use a camcorder; you'll see the IR very clearly.

Just use a lithium bat. Your driver will drop around 1.2 - 1.3 V and your diode will use approx 2.2 V, so that's already 3.5 V...Sorry I cant recommend a suitable current, as I don't know which diode it is. You'll have to do some research and find out how much your diode can be driven at.

Edit: @DTR ditto! I was also kind of hoping the diode would go first....

This is what im ordering

I have a camcorder Can i build the IR now ? :P About the current . Where should i start ? (i mean the min that i should use ?)

And your 2.5+W laser is Very good job !

Edit : DTR well i see i really must go with the red one

This aixiz module is cheaper, as there's free shipping. It'll take a week or two though as it is also from china: DIY Laser Module Host for TO18 5 6mm Laser Diode w H 3 Elements Glass 445nm Lens | eBay

This diode is the same price but shipping is free so you save $5... MITSUBISHI/658nm-660nm 300-400mw CW Red Laser Diode/LPC-826 | eBay

Default Re: Building The Red laser

use the IR diode just to practice pressing and removing it from your module- don't power it up- it has very little usefulness and as its almost invisible and thus very bad for the eyes especially at close range. It is human nature to look into the front of a common flashlight when it seems to be not working. While you would most likely never do that it could be done by another that is looking at your build. This has actually happened to some when they think their DPSS laser is not working.. they see no green or blue and without knowing they can do damage to their eyes with the IR that MAY still be working.

Default Re: Building The Red laser

I agree about the danger of IR. I attempted an IR build only reticently after having built roughly 50 or so lasers and most of which are 1W+. I actually completed the laser and it ran and everything but once I finished it I basically pulled the electronics out of the host and put them in an ESD bag and stored them in my parts supply box. They were just too dangerous to leave assembled and I don't plan on using it often.

I pretty much believe that any laser with a wavelength of about 780nm and up is just too dangerous and has to limited of uses to be worth building. I say this as I am designing an IR night vision system using a military night vision monocular that an ex-military friend of mine has. This is pretty much one of the few to maybe only uses to an IR laser and it will be used only by myself and my friend who has been taught by me about the safety and takes it quite serious since he knows that respecting instruments that can harm or kill you is important(someone with military weaponry training is usually pretty good with respecting dangerous instruments XD).

Basically what I'm saying is, forget about powering up the IR and use it for soldering and pressing practice. For a driver, this would probably be a better option to pair with an LPC-826. Its a good amperage and a very reliable driver:
Mohgasm 428mA Round linear driver circuit [MOHR428] - $12.99 : Cajunlasers Store

As for diode modules, I don't like the little wimpy aixiz brass modules. I would suggest these since they are quite superior in every way:

If its for a low power diode like your IR or LPC826 just use the standard aixiz module. If you're building something high powered, where heat will be an issue, then a copper module would be a better option.

You'll want to heatsink and laser diode you're planning on running above like 30mW, which is most of them. I've burned out my share of red laser diodes by just using an Aixiz module as the "heatsink"; the laser diodes really do need a heatsink.

He was planning on using a C6 heatsink with a module... An aixiz module is fine for an LPC826
