Hey guys, i just joined this community and i have a couple questions. I wanted to buy a 5mw red laser from ebay to potmod it. But can you even potmod them? or will it ruin the diode. I don't really care if it lasts long since its cheap, and do you think if i potmod it, i can burn with it like a green laser?

If you are talking about the same 1.50$ red lasers off ebay I am thinking of,
they don't have a pot to fiddle with.
Heck they don't even have a proper driver, just a single current limiting resistor, that's it.:crackup:

No - and you can't potmod a 5mw green laser and do that either.

ya u can potmod the green ones to make them brighter and to burn black plastic and stuff. ive done it before. I just dont know if the red ones work the same way. and my green one broke :(.

So... success ??? You can also use gasoline on a wood floor as the heating source for your log cabin. Briefly.

A 5mW green, if it really is 5mW green, is definitely not pot-moddable up to burning power. Assuming even crappy 10% DPSS efficiency, that would still be just a 50mW 808 IR diode. I'm not even sure 50mW of IR is enough to burn - probably would slowly - but there's no way you can potmod a true 5mW of green into a burning laser.

You probably didn't have a 5mW green pointer to begin with. It was probably over-spec at like 30 before you played with the pot.

It is a pretty pen, but it is 5mW only.
The diode can't handle more power, even if the driver were accessible and adjustable.

Have you ever wondered why there are so different pricing of green modules?
Perhaps there is a reason why the sellers don't just turn them all up to 200mW. :)

*Just unscrew the tip, then unscrew the module.

the problem is im broke as hell and i only got like $5 on my paypal lol. i just want to get a 5mw green laser for that. But cant find any that price.

i found some with free shipping and only $.99 but i think i will wait till i have $50 and buy a good laser, instead of a shitty ebay one.
