Yes, the 660 should look brighter. Like I said, 40mW of 635 is only as bright as about 130mW of 660. So 200mW of 660 will surely be brighter than 40mW of 635.

Yes, Andy's word is infallible.

I (and the light industry standard) say it's equal to ~130mW and you say it's 80mW of 660. But using the square root relationship between power and brightness, That's only a brightness difference of 27%. There's also the tolerance of laser diodes to consider. The 635nm laser I have is actually 640nm, which lowers the visibility to ~110mW of 660nm equivalent, and the difference between your prediction and my prediction is lowered further to only 20% difference in perceived brightness. If the 660 were also being cooled and running at 655nm, your prediction and mine would actually match. You say they are "very different" when they are in fact almost the same.

The CIE tables are not computer programs. They contain actual measurements of the eye response curve.

I am curious what are your plans for wiring the diode inside the pen? Are you going to isolate the aixiz from the case?

That looks easy to build without the breadboard. Isolate the Aixiz module from the host isn't hard. Just a layer of 3M tape around the module is enough and it will prevent the module from moving inside the pen. If it is still loose add another layer.

The last pen I built was a tight fit with the aixiz module not sure how much tape you could put around it and still get it in

Looking at the data sheet it is 635 around 2 Celsius but typical is 638nm for about 20C. A lot of the 635nm diodes are around 638 at 20C

Thanks for posting this. I just paid for two @ $20 each. I haven't done a build yet, but I've been gathering parts and one of these may be in my first attempt.

I noticed that these are listed on eBay UK, but the seller is listed as in US. I'll post when they arrive.

No need to isolate them if you build it like what I did since red diodes are case negative. In these pens you put the batteries in with the positive end towards the spring and the negative towards the flat tail cap to make it case negative. To get a good contact with the negative end of the battery I trimmed about 1/8-1/4 of an inch of the plastic insulation off the outside of the battery. I'll take a picture of it and add it to the ones in my build thread.

FWIW I built an LPC-815 red into a case negative 18650 style host pretty much the same way with a v5 flexdrive. The only difference was along with the LD+ wire I had to run a wire from the LPC's case pin (which is also its negative connection) to LD- on the flexdrive to provide the driver a path to ground. Now if you're using a microboost driver the wiring is different since batt - and LD - don't share a common ground on the driver board. i wouldn't recommend using a microboost driver on a case negative diode since it complicates the wiring a lot.

Maybe I am wrong but looking at these diodes data sheet the case pin on the diode is LD+ that would make it bad to ground correct?

I suggest you try with a little cheaper red diodes. Those from a old 8x-16x DVD-burners are excellent for building exercise. And you learn also how to breakdown the burners. Very educational.

These 40mW 635nm are more expensive. You should work on them when you have confident in succes.

I have great confidence but looking at the data sheet it is case LD+ I am looking to get ideas from other people to add to my own.
