I know its possible to build pointers with 200mW output but from what I learnt they are usually pushing the diodes and they dont last that long.

I want to build a 200mW 650nm lab style to use in a scanner soon but I have the problem of being able to find a diode that is ok running at that power, I also have the problem of where to get a heatsink to put that in (don't really want to buy one of the DX modules).

What diodes would you suggest that run at such a high power and are stable being at that power for long amounts of time?

LOC diodes, they can run that power no problem. You could even use a TEC to make sure it stays cold.

Where can I get my hands on one and are they any more expensive than buying an open can sled?

You can get a LOC diode from TheMonk in the buy, sell, trade section.. If you combine that diode in an Aixiz module, and one of these heatsinks from z-bolt: http://z-bolt.com/MODIIIbg-green-laser-module.html (they're the 4th item on the list), you can have a perfectly awesome labby capable of continuous operation, for very little $$. (no TEC required)
