I just brought 2 140mW 650nm Red High Power Sony Burn Laser Diode for 20 $

Will i be able to have fun with this laser. (burn things)

and

Is that a good deal?

Is the 140mW rating for pulsed or CW?

This is right out the page
"two precision new high power Sony laser diodes part number SLD1234VL.
They are rated for Class IIIb 140mW @650-660nm pulse mode developed for DVD RW 8x speed."

"I used it as 100mW CW with heat sink, it punched black vinyl at once and very bright (2.92V 200mA to my multimeter).
But I recommand 70-80 mW CW with heat sink (about 150mA).
That can be collimated and focused to a BURNING LASER POINTER type BEAM like picture!
It was built using pen style flash lamp and collimation lens from a cheap 1$ laser pointer.
There are countless uses for a small compact HIGH POWER RED laser, such as Communication, Medical treatment, HOLOGRAPHY, LASER LIGHT SHOWS, etc..."

You didn't get the best deal, but at 80mW you should be able to light matches and pop balloons.

Look at the top of this page, and click on the StoneTek Electronics link for 16x diodes.

Otherwise, you can harvest your own 20x open can diodes from Sony NEC Optiarc 719x (x=1, 2, 3) DVD drives, at around $25 or so.. You just have to take it appart and carefully remove the diode. The open cans can give you 250-300mW or more, depending on the lens type and heatsinking.
They are currently the most powerfull ones available for cheap.

But don't get the Sony NEC Optiarc 720x! That is a flat square diode, that is very hard to turn into a pointer, even if it is powerfull.


The 8x should still make nice lasers, but i definatelly wouldn't buy them at $20, when you can get 300mW for a few dollars more and a little work.
