It could be something non-optical.

Layman's description:
At first I thought it was a knob (stereo, fine-tuning, etc) But the would-be knob unscrews from housing with a rubber gasket at base of threads. The hollow "cap" unthreads to reveal the guts if you will. The tube leading to the insides is hollow, which has a clear triangle seated right in the hollow area. After that is another flat round optic fitted into an intricate aluminum bracket. The pictures say more than I can:
