Hey guys, my evil schemes such as this one has led me to your awesome site, and I'd like to run this idea by you.

An array of a dozen or so full size (3' x 5') mirrors is set up, in a semi circle to all reflect the sun to a square in the center of the circle.

At the center is a box. The top of the box will be a mirror that will direct the light down, onto a fresnel lens of the appropriate size. This will direct the light into some collimating optics. These optics could be made of something other than glass, like diamonds or some mineral so they could withstand the tremendous heat.

Hopefully from here you would be able to redirect the light to a target that you want to UNLEASH DESTRUCTION upon.

I know next to nothing about optics- do you guys think this would work?

It's interesting to think of sunlight in terms of 1,000 watts per sq. meter; imagine putting out 13,000 watts of power in a concentrated beam! ;D

Sorry Helio, that's not possible because sunlight isn't coherent. You couldn't keep it to stay focused like that, but still nice diagram anyway.

How about a 4' X 3' fresnel lens?!?! They claim they were able to melt pennies with it.... Believe me, if I still lived in Southern California I'd surely have to have one of these....the sunlight is as intense as ever in the southwest US (probably same way in Australia - if you can't get a laser legally I suppose something like this might satisfy your burning urge...)

I have one of those lenses from an OHP ( over head projector ) and it burns like hell, if I had one twice the size I probably could melt a penny

Its from the bit you place the paper on
