Ok, i have a little project, which started from looking at a cheap laser with those caps...
Can I make a shape that i can shine on a wall?

Here is my theory.... (which is probably wildly wrong... but anyway)

the caps look like glass with a pattern engraved on it. So... if I got a bit of glass and laser engraved a shape on it small enough, then stuck that in front of the laser... would that do the same job? Looking at the cap, they do look like a bit of glass with a shape engraved on....

I have googled it and every site either shows a line grating or goes into the science... I just want to see if it works!

I understand it wont (if it worked) produce the cleanest image, like the cheap caps, but seeing as i have a friend with a laser engraver, and I have a laser here... would it work?

It would work. They have effects caps in thousands of designs from stars to.... However elaborate you want. The problem with making your own effect cap is engraving the image so small. The image would have to be so incredibly small to make a projected image that it would be very expensive to have a company to do this. Much less finding a company to do just 1 etched design on a tiny laser lens.
What design where you thinking. If it's not too crazy I bet if you looked hard enough you might be able to find something close.

There wont be anything like it...

But its not a complicated shape, i am glad it will work.... as long as i can get it that small, i will fire over the details and see what he says, he recons he can do it...
If he can and it works... *rubs hands*.....

It's not exactly writing your name on a grain of rice. This is etching a design on precision optics. But hey if it works, let us know. It would be neat to have some custom effects caps.
I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on the subject can guide you further. I was just wondering how one would be able to perform such a small etching/ engraving / whatever process is needed

Don't think that would work.

You can defocus your dot to a blob, and then selectively blank out parts of the blob to create your image. The farther away your image "filter" is, the larger you can draw the mask.

http://laserpointerforums.com/f49/laser-optics-producing-images-87268.html < this thread was at the top of the forums before you posted this thread on top. Apparently, it is kind of like using a hologram as a reference beam to create another hologram? Anyways, I found an article that goes into more detail about how to create images with diffraction gratings. Let it suffice to say that it is much too complicated for us to do on our own with an engraving pen ;-)
