I saw WBS's thread on getting some good quality glass diffraction gratings, but never saw any resolution... are there any good diffraction gratings out there?

I saw a listing by Optotronics, but I really only need one: Optotronics Product Details

And a DL diffraction grating seems way expensive...

Any ideas? Thanks

I would also like to see something like this. Add a whole new dimension to this great hobby!

I PM'd brucemir to inquire what ones he uses for those fantastic pics, as I have been wanting some. Here is his quoted response, pretty sure he won't mind:

"All of my fan diffraction gratings came from Dragon Lasers. To me they are the best ones out there (11.99 a piece) without spending a lot of money. I do have some thin plastic ones from Optotronics but they do not compare. I also know the shipping from DL is 18 dollars so if you do order from them it would be cost effective to order a few at the same time. Their matrix ones are also really good. I do not know of any other place to get good quality ones and I have extensively searched Google looking for them with no luck."

I'll sub this thread for a while to see if anyone knows of better ones

Hmm $30 for one diffraction grating is almost WL kind of premium pricing...

Is that like a holography film or something? I'm just looking for a piece of glass with >500 lines/mm on it :p

Hey, just so everyone knows. Those glass diffraction gratings DL uses are only some sort of diffraction grating film glued to a piece of glass. Not real high quality if you ask me. They work fine though. I just thought I'd mention that.

I have no idea if Opto's are the same. However the thin plastic ones work fine even if you use a 3.5W laser on em. Just make sure they are clean of dirt or you WILL melt them.

I will always endorse the Dragon Lasers gratings because at 11.99 a pop they ARE the best ones out there. I have taken thousands of photographs using them and there are NONE out there at that price that give the results I have achieved using them, and I have not seen any posts on this forum showing a better one at the same price.. I spent 65 dollars for a Laserglow 5 line glass grating and it is only a quarter inch in diameter and very hard to use and the quality is not much different. I have extensively searched the web for diffraction gratings and for the money DL's are the best for the money. I have Optotronics and other grating films, and even when cutting them to fit a 35 mm slide to make them usable, they do not compare in quality. I have dropped and broken one of my DL gratings and it broke in a few pieces and it does not look to me that it is plastic glued to glass, as the edges are very sharp with no signs of plastic film hanging over the edges, but that is only by appearance. I have spent a ton of money on my laser collection and to spend 11.99 per grating is something I would not give any thought to.

And as in my PM to Shakenawake a while ago, DL does charge 18 dollars to ship one piece, + the 11.99 does equal 30 dollars. So if you order a few at the same time it will knock that cost down. My job in the real world is basically shipping product all over the USA from Truck Loads weighing 42500 lbs down to packages weighing one pound and everything in between. To ship even a tiny piece of glass to the USA from China 18 dollars is really not that bad of a price. Every grating I did purchase from them was ordered with lasers so it did not cost anything to ship them.

Definitely, buying more than 1 is the way to go, if you can.
It makes the shipping seem a little more reasonable. I recently purchased 4 transmission gratings from Dragon Laser, 3- fan type, and 1- matrix (dot) type.
You can always use more than 1! ;)

I did notice, as jeffreythe00 mentioned, that it looks as if a film (plastic) is attached to the glass. They do work fine though.

I have to agree with brucemir, for the price, you can't beat em!
