Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

Wow very interesting update.
CDBEAM is really incredible man: he think, he create, he errs, he modify, he build, he recreate, but thanked the guy who have commissioned him the work .. but LOL !!!:D

P.S. Yoshiyuki Tomino is the e-mail trasmuted form of Minamoto Kobayashi :D

Minamoto, contact me before you commission some work, everything you build I like too, maybe cheaper if two?

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

I really enjoy seeing these builds. :gj:

I really like good beam quality, and I like more power, but these beams that look like a Chinese fan are just wrong, sure if you hold them wide to narrow and look down the beam it's not so bad, but rotate it 90 degrees and there's that long ugly line.

Beam shaping via cylindrical pair then an expander seems like the way to go. I'm looking foreword to seeing this project, I plan to do some beam shaping myself, or bundle a bunch of single modes, but the novelty of short range fan shaped beans is wearing off, so I am happy to watch and I plan to join in the taming of the beams.

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

Yes, in my modest opinion the DPSS lasers and the single mode diode are the best choice to have a well rounded low divergent and tiny beam, but I assure You that a well corrected beam with corrective optics together a good beam expander like the Linos BE You will obtain a very very nice and powerful beam. At December I present to the forum the first 1.5W 520nm transparent handheld laser with corrective optics and the wonderful Linos BE. Of course behind this project there is the beautiful mind of CDBEAM 777 :p

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

You also have a very nice beam expander. I bet that thing cost 1000 dollars new. I am going to have to be more creative with what's available at a bargain.
You did get a great result
Thanks for sharing, it's nice to see what's possible.

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

I think his BE is more like 1700-1800 USD new. I have three of those same Linos BE's I found on ebay for 100 each looking for a project to use them for, would love to duplicate what he is building. I have put corrective optics in a 1.4 watt 520nm laser host here myself, but my optics aren't the right way to do it and only correct half way, his will be the first properly done fully beam corrected 520nm 1+ watt 520nm laser pointer using a cylinder pair and a real beam expander, not my unorthodox low budget half way there method, his will produce a very finely tuned output and I want one!

.. if You obtain the same goal with a fraction of the cost of my build, You are the real winner :p

Hey we are all having fun and learning, I have learned a lot about multi mode diodes....I have learned that they are a real PITA. LOL

Oh brother...that is an understatement !!! Optics can help...but cannot make things perfect....The laws of Physics and Optics are stubborn that way !!!

But....But...this does not mean we cannot try...And experiment.....we have made progress....and some of these new builds coming up will be ...a real hoot !!!.....Photonintoxication I say !!! Beam Out !!

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

Mine isn't fully corrected, I want what you are building. I can get rid of half of the unequal sides but that's the most I can get using simple PCX positive cylinder lenses. I do have a cylinder pair I bought some months ago, but no platform to mount them on and no way to fix the Linos to the front end. When you finish yours and show it off, I'm hoping I can have CDBEAM777 build something like it for me but I also have a wild project for him to work on too, if he has the time.

Edit: That said, I should add Ehgemus is working on a knife edge host for me in a week or so from now using four NDG7475T diodes and I plan on putting the right kind of corrective optics in it, but that one won't use a Linos beam expander either, I will use a single PCX lens on the end to collimate the expanded output, after the cylinder pair. This project has been months in the planning, just getting to a point where he can work on it for me soon. I'm also waiting on a Cyan Cannon II build :)

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

*** Blah, Blah Warning ***

Wow...The real take-away here is...that we are collectively pushing the envelope of our hobby forward...no government labs, massive research $$....and limited formal optics education. Just us hobbyists ...with a passion!!

No DoD, DaRPA....nothing...just us Piss Ants !! Now...you may say...Why ?? What is the End Game/Goal ?? Because...it is a challenge...and something that has not been done before !! ...and we choose to share our travels...to those of like mind.

I hope and trust that many enjoy watching the winding course of events. Perhaps...we have some real Optical Engineers watching our trial and error methodology ?? Dunno ?? Don't care !! They may find our stories...amusing...Don't care. We...as a group are evolving... using more and more the "scientific method"...with more and more optical measuring equipment. This equipment... albeit used...or DIY...will amplify and direct our efforts.

In closing...one can purchase equipment and build labs...but cannot instill curiosity or passion. One cannot buy ingenuity or an inspired solution/design. I speculate...that our efforts are monitored...from some vector....with more than a passing distain or dismissal !!....But then...remember my penchant for Tin Foil !! hahaha !! and...remember !!!

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

Well...one of the most challenging aspects of forging the " First " of any build....is to CAD, CAD....and CAD more iterations !!....and trying to dodge the bullet of discovering....mid-build....that ... "you screwed up....and if....only if you has shifted a component....a mere 2mm....all would be good "

To avoid this " Awww Crap" moment....I employ CAD...a lot !!! It was so with this build....and that demanded an evolution....from CCll ====> CClll

Along those lines....I have added to the drawing lineage....and see you now... the V4 drawing attached. To verify interference/ clearance issues....an end view is demanded....along with a plan view....and at times....also a side view.

SO....got it figured out ! Note the dual, side by side modules....are no longer centered ....but shifted...to yield sufficient clearance for the Flexmount units...to fit under the Acrylic canopy ID perimeter !

Anyway....just thought I would share some of what goes on....as the build evolves !! Pass the Coherent Pie please !! Happy Thanksgiving !!:wave:

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

Very nice, is it possible to push the diode modules a little further to the side of the heat sink so the output is in the center of the axis?

@cdbeam

I have never used CAD software.
As if I did not have enough of a learning curve trying to figure out how to build PCs which are relatively malware and virus proof for the past six months. And....different Linux distros virtualized:undecided:

What is the best CAD to learn with. I understand there are free versions but don't know which one to try.

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

AutoCAD by a company called Autodesk is the premium software most people use, I'm going to be learning it soon too (don't hold your breath, I keep saying that). You can get free instruction at www.mycadsite.com - Although it is completely free on their web site, I ordered everything they have on a CDROM to make it easier for 20 bucks, maybe it was less than that, don't remember now, it's sitting right here at my desk unopened for the last 9 months. They don't provide the software though, but if you are a student you can DL a student copy free at http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/all

Re: The Cyan Cannon II Build

CAD work is also a tool of great help in my schizz !!

I use an old 2D programe called " QuickCad 8" from Auto desk. This is really an obsolete programme....But....when one uses a particular soft ware....for a decade....to evolve to a new programe is a real PITA !!!!

That said....I have been slowly learning the free software from Dussault....called " Draftsight "...Ya Free....and very, very powerful !!!

This "Draftsight" software also has a great on-line user group !!!

Have fun...there is a whole world out there when it comes to CAD....and a lot to learn !!!

Beam out
