The beam looks pretty thick in the pictures, though. Is the beam diameter really that large, or is it just the camera?

Re: World's First Direct Diode 476nm Laser Pointer!

Looks like a normal beam diameter coming from a 3-element lens to me. He had it turned so you can see the flat profile of the beam and it was angled towards the camera. The size of the host might be throwing off your perception too.

People said the same thing about green laser diodes and 473nm diodes... :D

@hwang21
$3800 bucks from thorlabs. But with a typ divergence of 8.5/23.5, its not a good deal imo... :crackup:

dammit. I'm still waiting for the 520nm diode price to come down and now this. I wonder when (or if) DTR will have them in stock? :D

Re: World's First Direct Diode 476nm Laser Pointer!

AFAIK he won't. They would need to have some practical commercial use for the price to come down into the affordable range first and I don't see that happening really. Same goes for 488nm. It is possible that they may decide that 476nm is superior to the common 445nm diode for projector use. Then they would need to go through the R&D to get them to a good performance/reliability and then once in production they would slowly drop to a more affordable price. That's what happened with our beloved PL520s when they upgraded from DPSS.

To start this nerveracking build, I started off by pluging myself into thge wall for ESD protection. :D

Your ESD protection reminds me of wannaburnstuff's legendary ground screw. :D

Re: World's First Direct Diode 476nm Laser Pointer!

I just added an acrylic lens and made the laser fixed focus! It now looks much better without the focusing ring. There was no need for this laser to be focusable. It looks so awesome now!

The beam looks pretty thick in the pictures, though. Is the beam diameter really that large, or is it just the camera?
This is mostly just the camera, but the beam is now smaller with the acrylic lens.

I'll always try getting my hands on one of those...

Watch out for my future sale threads ;) I may be selling a line of pen builds including these diodes, PL520s, and PL450Bs. :D
