The dummy battery? There's nothing there to recharge, it's just a piece of metal with insulation on the side.
He uses an 18650 3.6v rechargeable battery because with a flexdrive, and you can't input more than 5.5v. There is 65-68mm of space in the barrel for batteries, so you could technically fit one 18650, which is 65mm long, or two 16340's (also called RCR123a), which is 34mm long. But you can't use two 16340's with a flexdrive, so that's why you can get a dummy battery, or ask him to make it to just fit one 16340.

If I may, if not money, what put you off on choosing a LOC+Meredith lens, 8x + 405-G1 lens and a 130-150mW module for your last matching portable set?

The o-like module woudn't fit with an 18650, but with a single CR123A (no dummy battery), it fits perfectly. The AixiZ modules will fit with an 18650, but the springs needed to be trimmed a bit (both on the driver and on the tailcap)
Niko, good question: actually, it was the money. As much as I wanted to do that, I couldn't justify spending that much money. It's possible that in the future, I will slowly upgrade them, but right now, I want to turn my attention (and my wallet) toward building a scanner.

The 14500 battery is only 14mm in diameter and is 50mm long, so it would not fit snug in the original design. Plus you won't get very much run time out of them (even when using a flexdrive), because they are only like 400mAh. Most of us like the 18650 because they are 2400mAh, which lasts so much longer.
IIRC (please correct me if I'm wrong), the DDL driver has a voltage drop of about 2.25-2.5v, so lets says 2.5v to be safe. The PHR diode needs 4.5 volts, so you need at LEAST 7v to run the diode without damaging it. You could use two 16340 3.6v rechargable, which are 4.2v fully charged. However you don't want the voltage to drop below 7v, because otherwise you can damage the window of your diode, or even LED it. IIRC, the 16340 at full discharge is around 3.2V, so using the DDL driver with only two lithium ion cells is not really safe, you'd want to use three. But the host won't fit three so, in my opinion, you're better off getting a flexdrive and using a 18650 or one 16340.

Probably not until I get back to school, which will be in like a week. I'll probably order a FlexDrive, but I don't want to have shipping problems because I already left for school.
Actually, come to think of it, I might not bring my soldering iron and electronics stuff to school for a couple of weeks after I get settled in because we have a small car... Damnit.
As a side note, the non-bluray 5V drivers I got from O-like were helpful in letting me test some of my C-mount diodes (was looking for an 808nm so I could drive some crystals I recently bought, but found nothing).

This is probably stupid of me to bump the thread, but I finally got all the parts and tools necessary to build the last laser in the set, the red. After my first LOC diode never even got off the launch-pad, I had to buy another one (why do these projects always end up costing more than they are originally meant to)?

Thanks. Once all the parts are here and they work correctly, the actual build process is pretty simple. Installing the green module took all of 15 minutes because it was just a matter of bypassing the switch and throwing it into Ehgemus's expertly designed hosts. The bluray took probably about 3 hours because I had to drill out the back of an aixiz module and shave the sides of the driver circuit board to fit into the module. And if I had ordered the right driver for the red in the first place and the diode had worked, it would have probably taken about 2 hours; instead, it ended up taking several weeks due to all sorts of other work that inundated me. When I have a project, I like to clear an entire day for it so that I can take as much time as I want; I prefer to work slowly and get things working correctly. I also procrastinate a lot.
