I suppose the cheap inverters will look like that... no matter what...

Yup. A load raises the voltage to 105V, but the shape remains.

Default Re: A short session with a 1W> 532nm DHOM. - New pics

I bet the top board in the psu is the driver, and the bottom just a SMPS. I'm also betting the SMPS puts 5V upstairs, and that is then regulated by that board to 2.5v at constant current for the pump diode.

Some probing with a multimeter should show this.

Therefore, you may not need the 120vac inverter, and just a nice regulated supply of 5V.

How many amps the thing draws will dictate how big a 5V regulated supply you will need to build.

For projector use, this reduces that huge power supply down massivly, to one board, which can be easily supplied by a more compact SMPS, or one that runs several laser with just one main PS footprint.

Yep... ive done so a while ago, but never got to posting, but the driver (fans, tec, laser, everything is on this board:

The board requires a 12VDC and 5VDC supply with common ground, while room isn't a premium, I desided to downsize this PSU to the bare driver, and then power everything (Along with my red and blue laser) from one master SMPS.

so more or less right now im powering this thing off 12V, and using a linear tapped from that for 5V output (LM338).

On the back of the board are a pair of N-channel fets, which is the main thing that needs heatsinking (when I get around to milling out a flat 1/2" aluminum mount for the driver board to lay flat, Ill heatsink it that way, with the flat laying on the aluminum floor of the projector, heat is definatly of no issues...especailly for TO-220 devices )

Laser is running nicely now, and Ive had a chance to play with the modulation a bit, now im just waiting on the meter to show up so I can see what it outputs.

The result of this little endevor won me back 5X the room the original mains PSU was taking, and now will give me some lineancy when I start making the R/B arrays. (a powerfull projector is nice... a small compact powerfull projector is nicer )

Cheers.

Good stuff GBD - I told ya it would make things easier - one master PS running all three lasers. Also your PJ will now be more energy effecient, only dumping the heatload of one SMPS into the case

And more compact!

5W+ RGB from a small thing looks far cooler then some large bulky machine.

Thanks for the idea, I don't regret doing it.... and I got a nice SMPS spare out of the mod (and a case I guess.. should I ever need it)
