Yes it is. Getting it into a standard dell xps 8700 case took some mcguyvering, and bending away part of the case metal internally, as well as replacing a bunch of cables with longer ones. Also had to take out my sound card because where as with the 460, there was some space between it, and the card, with the 1080, it was completely flush and blocked the fan close to the ports, with zero airflow. Couldn't get the PSU into the case either, so now it's just sitting on top of the case. (I could have, but it would mean sacrificing two USB ports that are at the top. It's a beast of a card, and completely destroys everything I've thrown at it so far at 1080p.

Sounds like it's time for a case upgrade too! :p Saying that, sometimes you just gotta make do. I know I've been there plenty of times.

Yeah, performance must be out of this world. Enjoy!

I try to make the most of what I have. For now it will work just fine, and I think I will only be upgrading the system as a whole when the cpu starts to become the bottleneck. To upgrade to a new case now I'd have to buy motherboard and windows also. It's by no means an optimal arrangement. I'm going to see how I can at least mount the psu to the case physically so it's not just lying on top of the case loose.

Edit: With the setup I have right now, except for adding a bit more ram, I think I can eek out 2 more years at least.

i7 4790
12gb ram
500gb samsung evo ssd
1tb samsung hd
1tb toshiba hd
Evga gtx1080 FTW (highest clock speed currently available, though kingpin might be better binned, classified is not).

Oh yeah, Dell OEM parts/license eh? (Edit: I've been in Canada too long ... eh?)

As for the PSU ... Duct Tape, that is all. :D

Yup, dell refurb I picked up last summer, came with windows, I just upgraded to ssd. The GTX460 I had from a looong while back, I picked it up in store, open box very cheap, and meant to SLI it back in 2012 or so, but never got around to it.

380x over a pico... that's interesting.

Just got in a 3" glass sphere. Talk about a mind blower watching the beam enter the sphere and bounce off the walls multiple times before exiting..

Not so random as it is indeed laser related, but here's a leather holder/sleeve I crafted for my Sanwu Pocket Series laser:
