The apparel retail company Forever 21 has a massive interactive JumboTron style video display up in New York City's Times Square that taps into a video camera pointed towards the adjoining sidewalk. I came upon it and thought that it would be a fun way to have a MASSIVE beam shot and so I video recorded it.

The laser I use is a Cree 14500 host set to 500 mA with a 12X Pioneer BDR-205 diode.

As I was doing it there were people standing next to me laughing. At the end of the clip you can actually hear chuckling. It was a lot of fun!

Yes, I forgot to mention that my camera was setup on a tripod for stability. It does look a bit CGI'y. Anyone in NYC (or visiting) can play with it too but just be careful when aiming the laser to be sure and 100% avoid the source video camera's aperture. Such a beam shot would absolutely ruin the camera!

Thank you to both of you for your compliments. In the Full HD version it is possible to just barely make out the violet laser dot as it approaches the video camera aperture. The interactive source camera is located just above the top center of the giant screen.

Verry nice, i believe the beam is not focused so it shouldn't be dangerous for the eyes,... :D

Thanks! Maybe you're just trying to cover for me but :D but no, I must admit that it was tightly focused. I wanted to ensure that the beam showed up well on the video particularly given that 405 nm is already difficult for your average video camera to capture and reproduce. I stand 6'4" (1.91 meters) tall and as such when I fully extend my arm up, holding and directing the laser, there is no one around that could accidentally enter into the beam's path.

Yes, computers integrate her green-screened original 'performance' with the live action on the Times Square sidewalk and display the result instantly on the MASSIVE screen. It is a very cool display and fun to interact with.

Pretty cool looking on the big screen....You might want to remember as well that Time Square has BANKS of police cameras all over the place....as well as officers roaming around. Not to rain on your fun too much, but I personally feel brining a 'illegal' laser to that place is a bad idea...
