I got my HeNe in the mail the other day. This thing sure is neat!!! I put it on the power meter and its doing an average of 2mW with a peak of 2.5mW, even though the rated power is only 1mW. I sure was surprised when I could faintly see the beam in the dark! It looks pretty much like a normal red laser, but I dont have any 650nm red to compare it to. I'm sure side-by-side there is a noticeable difference. Another cool thing is that when you look into the HR mirror of the tube, its actually bright blue inside. Pretty weird!!! Anyway, here are the pictures I took. The quality sucks but you get the idea!

Aww isn't it cute.

I love that colour inside the tube, is that a laserbeam or just something that lights up?

And, why does all your pictures got something electricity looking thing?

He burned the CCD on his camera taking laser pictures so those pixels are all fried. Every laserist should have this mark.

the camera actually still works in that area, it just has a weird tint. It's really weird... almost like there is a film over the ccd that was actually burned rather than the sensor itself.

So is HeNe like an orange color?, its looks great.

Got any beam shots? :)

Helium/Neon (HeNe) lasers are several colors. This one is probably 632nm, so it is "more orange" than you see in most "red" (about 660nm) lasers. 632nm also "appears" brighter to our eye.

So theres no way to tell if its more red then orange? I really just want a nice bright orange color not a red/orange.

632nm is orange/red

I don't have one available, but you should be able to find a picture here that shows a 660nm next to a 635nm to get a comparative visual

You can get another comparison from the below scale

ok, so its a dark orange. Is it bright enough at 1-3mW for a visible beam in the dark?

At 1-3mW you will need some sort of visualizer in the air to see the beam (incense smoke, fog, smoke in a can, etc.)

ok well as long as it lazes a nice orange red, that would be really nice.

Perhaps gooey could try to take a beam shot?
