I just whipped this up since I was bored, and stuck at home while my leg is getting better.

I had to use a crap camera, since it's the only one I could get to see the hades at all.
In real life, the hades actually looks exactly like a 5mw red. Then you go blind.

Basic setup is a 1.5 mil trash bag doubled and taped to the wall. In the corner is a small piece of test foam, just black packing foam for diodes and electronics and such. Usually the hades catches it on fire, but it didn't this time. Pay attention to the top of the faom when I'm on it and you can see the smoke pouring off of it.

I'll do a better vid later when my good camera get replaced.

Sweet vid, good brightness comparison. Is the Hades 808nm or 1064nm?

The one I have is 808. Most hades are 1064. The 1064 ones are ~ 700mw.

The 1064nm ones were 500mW I believed. I didn't know laserglow called the 808s hades as they're worlds apart though.

I recently got to get my hands on a 500mW 808nm one, only half of yours, but don't worry, with a little luck I'll soon have my hands on >1.2W ones for under $800 :D

Why are 808nm's so expensive? are they not just a collimated pump diode, common to all green pointers?

Modules aren't. Portables are. Low demand, and then there's the overhead of making a case, driver, etc that can handle the power and heatsinking requirements.

I dont understand. If you were to remove the KTP and IR filter from say a 125mw green, would you not end up with 0.5w 808?

Well you'd have to recollimate it and all, but sure, you got the right idea. Then again I'll be getting in some 808nm >350mW pen lasers soon that I'll be selling for <$250. Between the cost of a greenie with a true 350mW pump, and the labor to remove everything and recollimate it, I think the price is decent.

If these were mass produced, sure they'd be a bit cheaper, but there's low demand for getting finished products of 808nm portables, and that's a good thing IMO because they can be pretty dangerous in the wrong hands!

Oh, and Aseras 1W is expensive also because its a PGL laser, not a little pen one. 1W would be too much to be practically powered by 2xAAA batts. I agree that the $1.2k asking price was a little steep though (perhaps he talked them into a discount?) so I'm hoping to be able to offer >1W lasers at ~half that price to anyone interested adn responsible enough.

Lanling or whoever it was sells a 1W 808nm TO-5 laser diode on Ebay... I think its 90 bucks total after shipping. Thats very reasonable IMO.

one would think you could just get one of those 808nm 1w diodes and make your own for fairly cheap. as long as you provide enough heatsinking and can see in ir to colimate the beam.

Oh yeah, the diode is cheap as hell. Its getting a good driverboard, a case that fits everything together including batteries, driverboard, diode, and is threaded so you can get the collimation optics in there, and on top of all that it needs to be well heatsinked, have the time delay, key, saftey dongle, aperture shutter etc...

Now you get a general idea of why the nice, solid PGL units cost a decent premium over anything homebrew? ;)

If you just want 1W of 808nm though. If you have a regulated PSU and a block of aluminum/copper, you could buy a c block and heck, you could even tape it to the copper and for <$100 have a working 1W 808nm emitter.

That is very impressive! I have a few IR diodes rated at 300mW but I never tried to work on them. Well.. I did, but I think I killed one in the process. I really don't know. It didn't pop a balloon from a couple feet, and I tried to change the focus for quite some time. I will be making a powerful IR laser pretty soon though :)

Thanx Aseras;
