My dogs are much more sensative to colors at either end of the spectrum, they'll go after my 15mw violet or a 3mw red before the 70mw green.

I'm not entirely sure what the dominant wavelengths are for the photoreceptors in dog eyes, but having evolved as predators it would make sense that they are well able to spot the difference between green (useless plants) and not green (possible prey).

One thing that could be a factor is that monochromatic light is rare in nature, and saturated colors near the spectral ends appear very unusual to dichromatic animals. If thats a reason to chase, observe, run or ignore is a matter of character, probably.

I have a kitten about the same size, 3months old. He loves chasing all lasers and I'm sure he will love chasing my yellow when I get one. ;) Nice, video btw, I think it's an original!

Cats and dogs have diminished ability to see reds, but obviously they can see enough of those wavelengths to be able to react to a red laser dot. For them 66onm is probably like 808nm is to us - just barely visible at low powers.
My cats will chase 5mw red laser dots, but they went nuts over my 131mw 473 blue - they kept trying to jump up and grab the beam - even though the laser was on a table and not even moving! They also like greens, but not as much. I'll see what they do when I get my 3mw yellow/orange laser.

BTW, my one dog is scared to death of the dot of my WL Fusion! But my other dog could care less....a personality thing, I'd say.

I doubt that, since they are also able to see the dot in bright conditions, while for us light at the far red is easily swamped out by sunlight on a bright day. They might not be able to solve the color difference between say 670 and 620 nm, but i'm quite sure they are able to see the light.

What kind of dog do you have? My pit bull (God rest her soul :'( ) was deathly afraid of my DX 150, but would chase 5mW 532. Until I build a 405 ~12mW (she absolutly loved chasing) then she forgot why she was afaid of the DX 150 and would chase the dot and try to bite the beam. I'm always very careful using higher power laser with my pets.

Make your pets wear protective laser goggles when chasing lasers. Their eyes are as important as yours.

LOL, Wtf do yo think when you let your pets stare at high powered laser dots?
Would you stare at them without eyewear?

use low power lasers to play with your pets, always less than 5 mW

Anyway, the yellow laser in the video probably is a 1-2mW one, and the cat is awesome

I couldn't have said it in a way that sounded ok, but I have shown my pets my high powered lasers before. Not consistently, habitually, and not for longer then a couple seconds. As when I use my lasers without goggles. Other wise, I have plenty of 5mW lasers I play with my pets with. Anyway, there's no reason for me to justify myself, I'm a professional. ;)

Animals arent as stupid as humans sometimes.. if looking at the dot hurts there eyes, they won't. A cow in a field doesnt stare up into the sun until its retinas are fried either.. humans however, are perfectly capable of that and some even use binoculars or telescopes to expedite the process.

Obviously should shoud prevent hitting your pets right in the eye with the beam as there is little defense against a few 100 mW - the point where blinking isnt fast enough to help them.
