)Nah, you should be pretty right with the brightness. I've built this up a bit as I use it for things like school disco's pretty frequently (like tonight), but if its just around the house, you can still get the same colours with lower powers

Are laser light show machines/projectors normally produced with such powerful lasers? Wouldn't the same hazards be present just the same as if they where in a hand held pointer?

Yup, infact you'll find many, if not most laser projectors are in the multi-watt range. Some reach into the 40W range for a green only system, and I think I've seen up to 30W for RGB.
However, the beams NEVER reach the audience at these powers, so there is very little risk. Scanning the audience is just asking for trouble. Some people do it, but you have to complete a heap of safety checks before you do, to prevent blinding people, so it's easier not to.
