Is it just me, or is he driving that DVD LD with the original driver for a 5mW diode :-? :eek:

If he is running it from a bench power supply it would work ok, that pcb has only got a limiting resistor on it going by the size.

I've seen this video and I am also quite skeptical but the driver has more then a few resistors in it. I was also surprised to see that the the photo diode was soldered to the
driver!

Well, according to IgorT, it is a driver that responds to the photodiode of the 5mW diode.
So, since DVD diodes do not have a photodiode, it is useless and unpredictable.
