Something I whipped up tonight, and is in NO way pretty. heh.

I'm getting good at cutting 4" circles in glass now as well. :p

The motor is a modified RC servo but i'm not happy with it. I can't get it slow enough without it stalling. The glass I picked isn't great either. It's not textured enough. The wheel has two layers, with another static disc held in front of the lasers.

Doing this also showed me just how crappy my camera is. The 650nm shows up pink regardless of camera settings, even though it's a deep red in person, and the 405nm didn't show up at all even though it's easily visible to the eye.

The lasers are 30mW 473nm, 280mW 650nm, and I think the green is 25mW but i'll have to test it again to make sure. There's 50mW of 405nm in there too but like I said, it doesn't even show up.

Anyway, here's the 'thing'.

Yeah -- Too fast!

The shapes look good, but are to frantic to enjoy. The one I saw a couple of weekends ago was running <.5 rpm

Also, you might try removing the static wheel and setting it up to rotate in the opposite direction of the other wheel. This opposing rotation wheels set-up increases the variability of your shapes. You will need to mount it a bit closer to the current wheel to make this double set-up work

Another idea to play with is gluing small pieces of diffraction grating onto the wheel farthest from the lasers

I just started designing a lumia projector. I'm thinking it will be up around 1.5W :evil:

I really need beam expanders for the DPSS lasers too. the wide beam of the 650nm diode gives a much better shape than the blue and green, that's mostly all the static layer does, help spread the beams out more since without it, the 473 and and 532 pretty much just ended up as dots that wandered around (the 532 actually still suffers from this in the first part of the video). And yes, I know it's too fast, but i'll have to come up with some other motor to fix it. Like I said, when I drop the current on the server any more, it just stalls.

Very cool project :wave:

To make it slower, you can use motors with integrated gearbox, which are available in model making stores with different gear reductions.

To expand the beam, you can try a simple combination of two lenses - one to expand and another to collimate the larger beam.

Thanks, but the RC servo is already a gear reduced device, that's why I went with it originally. And also, considering I built the collimation assembly that's on the 473nm.. I know how optics work. :na: This was just something I threw together last night.. Which should be evident by the fact it's made out of hot glue, wire ties, electrical tape and a coat hanger. :D It will improve as I have time to tweak it.

what is missing from my Lumia.:D:D
Slow really is the key in this particular effect.
For the "optics" I got creative with a soldering iron on one of those clear plastic "fake" cd's that usually come on top of a box of 50 CDRs.:whistle:
I found the best effects to be lots of tiny yet deep pits very close to each other.
