Happy 5/20!!

So I have a few weeks off, and have decided to dedicate my time to a well needed laser marathon. :D Today, I wanted to start the marathon off with something small, so while digging through my piles of junk, I came across this WL Fusion laser. I bought this used a few years ago, and the output is fairly unstable. Considering it is 5/20. I decided to throw in an Osram PL520, but run at low power to blueshift the wavelength.

I started by pulling off the button:

Then I used a vise to pull out the module. I nicked up the pain a bit, but oh well.

Here is the disassembled module. I decided against sacrificing this module for the switch, as the module is CNI made and I may find use for it in some DPSS projects in the future. Instead, I just found another switch board used for pen hosts.

Here is the switch board soldered to the microboost drive, which in turn is soldered to the PL520 laser diode. I don't know what current it is set at, but I dialed the potentiometer until I got 15mW of output.

Next I pressed the whole module back into the host, and made final adjustments to the focus of the (acrylic) lens.

Here is the finished product!:

and of course, a pic of it running!!

The color of this laser is definitely more blue than my other 520nm lasers, but I am away from the lab so I cannot get a spectro reading for the next few weeks. Regardless, this was a fun build and was a nice start to the plethora of projects I am about to tackle!!

BTW, if anybody needs help with a pen build, I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Great build and kind of similar colour I would expect from a 515... Some rep for what it's worth ;)

Thanks :D I'm looking forward to getting the 515nm diodes from the group buy going on...I plan on underdriving it like I did this one so I can push it more blue. If I get lucky I'll get sub 510nm. :)

Can't REP you yet but I do love pen builds and appreciate you sharing this. So much colored goodness in a small package:) Didn't realize they shift down when you don't push them. What's the lowest nm you've gotten from one ?

I haven't done any spectrometry on the green diodes yet but I will when I have access to a spectrometer two weeks from now. Laser diodes blueshift with both low temperature and low current...the green diodes don't shift much with temp but from what I've seen do with current... I'll have to get some solid numerical data on that!!

cant wait to see the results! I've been thinking about a 520 or 515, i'm trying to decide on which diode to choose.

Cool build styropyro. I like seeing members showing step by step pictures. It's fun to read and watch :pop:

John check out his youtube channel, he's the guy that does al the DIY videos. Between him and my brother is the reason I got into to DIY laser's lol
