Default CPU + Laser = Fun

So I was pointing my <5mW red around in my workshop today and it hit something that made this crazy refracted reflection. When I went to see what it was I found an old computer CPU that I had taken apart a long time ago. Not only did I remove it from the computer but also (not so carefully) removed the protective cover over the etched silicon chip. So these are a few pics of what happens when you reflect a laser off one of these chips.

Sorry about the quality. I took them with my iPhone and was tring to hold the cpu, aim the laser and point the camera all at the same time. I'm still working on my DSLR laser photography so the iPhone was the next easiest thing. You still get the point though.

This is what the CPU looks like. The cover was extremely hard to remove so I ended up cracking the whole thing by accident. I then glued the pieces back together on a piece of paper. (Not really sure why I didn't just glue the pieces themselves back together...)

Pretty cool effects right?

Ahh, the good old laser microscope!
Some people have shined one at a drop of water dangling from a needle tip.
When you reflect if off a CD, you can see individual tracks.
Whenever you have small and somewhat reflective structured surfaces,
you get a nice laser amplification on the wall.

Good find!

I wonder if those are the actual traces on the chip.

I think these are the reflections of the grooves. I also tried taking a lens that expands the dot to be more like a flash light (don't know the proper term) and shined that at the cpu. It gets very dim when doing it that way but then you can start to see little structures and it looks more like a projected image than a bunch of reflections.

Nice pictures! That is one very old CPU. Looks like it might be a 486 or something similar. I have a few of those around...

Next time for removing a cpu cover use a gas blow tourch and make it 200.C hot so the tin melts and the cover probably will just fall right off

Hey! I was curious to see what was in there!

By the way, I tried to super glue it back together the other day, and boy was that a dumb idea...

The whole thing oxidized and doesn't reflect well anymore. I have a few others but they don't work as well.

Here's a 486 DX2 that isn't quite as mutilated.

Ditto on that good find-( i did that one long ago)

The only limitation of items that one can shine a laser thru or reflect off the surface is your imagination.

Example- my current avatar (about to expire to a new one, btw) was made by reflecting three lasers off a disc that was made to attach to a battery powered device that is used to abrase thick skin/callouses from your feet(lol) , more or less a sander. This was done at an extreme angle.
While some items dont make a result that is great, others work better than expected.

Something you wouldn't know if never tried.

I recomend using lower powered lasers until the effect is known.
Once at a party a girl put one of my green pens onto her diamond ring, and although the result was stunning(there was fog in the room)there was no control of where the many beams went, including the eyes of many who crowded around to see what was making her say 'Wow! Come check this out'

Lumia efx may be on of the things with the most possibilities. Take a few pen lasers to your local glass and mirror shop. They have many types of textured glass there. One time I did that the owner/manager found it so interesting he went to the back of his shop and came out with some scrap pieces for me to take for free. I have been back since with new nms to show him and every time I get more 'free samples'.
Hint-- look in thier *****ter(when they are not open)

And if you happen to have an old movie screen, low power lasers are all you need, in fact the reflection of higher power laser can be way too bright, working too well, and even dangerous(especially with 445 and 405).

Like the glass shop, going to thrift shops with a pen laser will most likely end up with you finding many new items to use with lasers.

Try this if you havent already. Shine your laser(s) thru water coming from your kitchen(or bathroom) faucet. Try just a drip and full go and everything in between.

Faucet tips that aerate the water make a different effect. Try very slow drip, so that there is time between the drops where the laser is unchanged. An upside down version can be made by using a low power fountain pump in a bowl of water. Keep your laser back a bit unless it is waterproof, btw.

The walls and ceiling in my laser lab(formally my living room) are a flat white color. I have had lumia on the movie screens(4) at the far end while doing lumia one two opposing walls and several overhead. This makes a nearly 360 degree light show(dont forget the music)

ENJOY!!!!!

peace

the hak.

post script:
Most of the above was posted mainly for the many newcomers here (WELCOME BTW) One reason I post this is to show you that there are many more interesting thing that can be done with lasers aside from burning and they are much safer and less likely to get the wrong reaction from your friends and family.
Did you REALLY expect mom and dad to like seeing your laser burning stuff?
IMO that aspect it better NEVER being shown to anyone not already 'into' lasers.

If you have found this post of value please show your appreciation by becoming a sponsor of LPF every month, and, who knows? Maybe next this month YOU will be the lucky one to win a nice laser item like I did last month.
