Thanks for the input Zeebit, Really appreciate it. I like the white ones too. They're just beautiful :D I'll send another sample for a slightly thicker powdercoat later with different specifications.

Re: Copper Pen Host - The Cypreus Series 2x10440 and 1x10440 [Pics and Info]

Nice Coatings ! :)

My favorite is the white one ... looks very nice :)

Let's hope that the thicker coating will be better

Some samples arrived today finally, Love the powder coated ones BUT they didnot survive the drop tests, As much as i loved the finish of the matte-black hosts I think im going to let this option go. White ones get scratched and dirty quickly.

However Im loving the Chrome plating, It's so nice you have to hold it in hand to get the feel.

I'm a big fan of these up and comings. Look great and really pushes high duty cycle for such a small host. You can count on me to purchase.

Thanks DukeA. I'll put you down for one when they're ready :D It has approx the copper mass equivalent of a V5 host that I just released. (100g Vs 112g) And I have very big plans for these too. Just waiting on my Efest IMR 10440's (3Amp Discharge) I'll hook one up to a 9mm diode 2Amp+ should be noe problemo.

I hope that the 1W 520's come down to a slightly better figure. I can't wait for those damn diodes. This host just wants them, I know it!

Thanks buddy, I know its a great method and looks good, but not my cup of tea. I dont really see any practical use of it, I prefer my customers donot lose any money on such. It's their preference otherwise, they can get it done later if they like.

@Vinzenz & Krnaznboy: I dont do that unfortunately but I believe you can get gold plating kits now, colloidal solution costs arround $20-$30 and you can gold plate all you want. I dont plan to do them myself but It'll be interesting to see some gold plating done.

What's the mAh on those batts?
Hell yeah for 1W of green on these!

It is 350mAh , they recently released this version of 10440's so it's kinda scarce but they are available readily at a few online stores.

Here's the review/tests that a person did on another forum, shows the discharge rates at different current and from the results it looks very promising.

Interesting but even if it works we'd get maybe 5min between charges for the 1W diode :/

Small price to pay for all that power in such a small package.

It will only last 5-10 mins on a 2 amp draw

We can get a decent runtime 10+ minutes from these particular batteries according to my calculation.

The point isnt that it will last short while, The point of the matter is 2+ amps setup in a pen host, That is the big leagues, thats all's Im saying!

Re: Copper Pen Host - The Cypreus Series [Update post #14]

Many e-cigs used to use tiny batteries, to feed a ~2 ohm load off a lithium ion cell, back of the napkin says almost 2 amps draw for that. 'Bout time we start getting "standard" sized cells that are just as capable ;-)

As for chrome vs. powdercoat, chromed also has the benefit of being able to transfer heat to the user's hand more quickly. With the runtime based on the powersource, I wouldn't know if that would actually be a problem or benefit, though.

If weather-proofing isn't a major requirement, perhaps an optional vent hole? I don't think we've had more than one reported instance of a Li-Ion accident, and that was with a much larger format cell, but peace of mind and the like. For most, it would be more important that the host not have a random, ugly hole drilled in it.

Nice work on getting a clicky in the tailcap too, not many pen-sized hosts with a clicky.

Yep, this would be a great DIY "sleeper" laser.

Alternatively, drive a fancy diode at very low power and still get decent runtime. Maybe even be able to utilize plain ol' NiMH AAA or *gasp* alkaline.

Re: Copper Pen Host - The Cypreus Series [Update post #14]

That's some good suggestions Bshanahan14rulz It's good to have a member with deep insight on another aspect of designing, Your comments are well recieved and I will definitely keep them in mind.

The thing about the 10440's is, there hasnt been any reliable ones untill now. I dont trust the trustfire and ultrafire xxxmAh at all. But, The one's that were the reason behind this idea was the efest 10440 IMR., and there proper tests done on them which show promising results. I would be amazed if the trustfires were even half of what they're advertized and they can't draw higher amps anyways.

One can always stick to 300-500mA load, and get a good 45-60minutes run out of these batteries. But why not a 3W pen, Now that it can be done? :D
