My first post - lets hope this works correctly!  :)

This is a pic of my bluray pointer built from a PS3 diode.  The two momentary buttons control the violet and red lasers within the diode package, although due to the different focal lengths required the violet laser is well collimated, but the red produces a large ugly spot.

It is interesting pointing it at everything to see how much they fluoresce - for anyone else who has built one, try pointing at a Visa debt card  ;)

I'm not quite sure what you are expecting - it is just a current limiting resistor connected to each push button (obviously a different value resistor for each wavelength).

It was a red laser pointer which had white LEDs around the outside (hence the two seperate buttons).  I ripped out the red laser and inserted the PS3 diode in an Aixiz module (small amount of drilling required).  Using the existing PCB with the two buttons, I removed the exising circuit and added a resistor for each wavelength.

what power is the red?
I just used the resistor which was running the original red laser, so it is probably running way under its capability (I guess a mW or two).  Since it is not collimated properly I couldn't be bothered spending more time adjusting the red.  The 405nm reading was just under 8mW when I was figuring out how much current to put through it.

Catdog - what kind of batteries does that use ? It appears to use the tiny little button cells ! If it does, how many, and what is the voltage ?

The reason for so many questions from all of us is multiple :

We share knowledge on here on how we make stuff - so unless you plan on selling these out to folks or something, it would be nice to get soem of your specifications. Like what drilling did you have to do ? In order to fit the diode in the housing ? Is that what you meant ? also - what voltage are you running it at, as well as what current ? Can you take some pictures of the "guts" of it for everyone to see ?

It uses 4 x LR44 batteries (1.5V each - total of 6V). The working voltage of this particular diode is approx 5.2V, and I am running it at about 27mA. I used the following page for info on the diode, although my operating current is quite a bit lower than his at the same output power (the working voltage of my diode is much higher than his):
www.fineartradiography.com/hobbies/lasers/blu-ray/index.html

The drilling was to increase the space inside the head to fit the axis module - the diameter of the original laser module was about 5mm, whereas the aixiz module I used has a diameter of 8mm. I had to break the legs off the LEDs as they were in the way for the larger hole, but that didn't really matter since I never intended to use the LEDs (otherwise I would need 3 buttons for violet, red, and LEDs, and space is tight enough as it is!).

Unfortunately now that I have glued the head back onto the aluminium case it is not easy to take photos of the "guts", but as I have said there is not much to see - two push buttons, two resistors, the PS3 diode and an aixiz module.

That depends on your definition of long! The batteries are 150mAH, assuming I can only get half of that before the battery voltage starts to drop it is still 2.5 - 3 hours of continuous use.

Link fixed TL ;)

Re: My bluray pointer

very nice - if you build another one, take some pics and make a tutorial!!!! we'll all be waiting ;)

This is the first and only bluray pointer I have built, so your one wasn't made by me!

I will definately take some photos during construction showing how to put it together if I make another one.
