About a year ago, my quest for one of the fabled 5W C-mount 650nm diodes ended when Jmillerdoc kindly let me buy his. I bought a PLD5000 driver and set the current to a little over 4A, and dropped the diode into one of those common c-mount casings on eBay. I get a huge beam, but it is powerful and red and I am happy. I finally got around to making a video!

I also added some info on my solid state laser projects, and hope to finish those cannons once I graduate and get some time off!!!

I don't think I'll drop this beauty in liquid nitrogen. :D I killed my 515nm diode doing that recently (probably from thermal shock), so I'll save the cryo stuff for things I can afford to lose. These 5W c mount reds are hard to come buy, and not cheap (~$350).

Sawwweeeett!! That was too cool, thanks SP! And I am happy you added the stuff that you're planning on doing in the future, I am so excited for the pulsed Ruby laser.

That's really awesome. I wish they were a bit more common though. I'd really like to get one if they were.

My kind of madman;)
We certainly need to meet when you get here;)
Doctorate. Fantastic!
L9ve that you posted a powerful 650. Been trying to get those who don't have a 650nm interested.

I have a question.
I put together my 3W 808nm c-mount in a different housing than the one you have and it took 5A at 3.1V to hit just over 1.5W. I have a 10A power supply to try next as that was the limit of the 5A one but I certainly didn't expect it to take that much power.
I don't have any information on the diode either as I bought it for $10 I think from Crazyspaz who isn't here anymore. Thoughts?

is that the raw output from the diode ?

Yeah ... something isn't right there. 808nm diodes usually do about 1W/A and normally have a forward voltage of ~1.8-2.2V when running at spec'd currents.

Well this is the housing I bought.

If you look at the pictures and how they show it aligned I didn't do it like that. What I mean is see how one corner of the diode touches the edge of the round piece. It seemed like it was more accurate to set the diode so both those corners would have an even gap to the round plate. I get the feeling I was supposed to do it exactly as shown so it actually isn't aligned right now. Problem is I don't know how I'm going to get it apart as it is a very tight press fit. The whole thing definately gets warm quick at 5A.
I didn't test it with apart first as I was too edgy about it. I did take some pics though.

It's possible then that the die isn't aligned correctly with the centre of the collimating lens - resulting in significantly reduced output power. It's also possible that the diode is partway zombied - so you're still getting a decent amount of power out but at much higher currents than normally would be required.

Not surprised it gets warm quick - you're dumping in 15W and only getting 1.5W out. You should be closer to 6-8W in and 3W out.

I'd expect a 3W 808nm diode to take around 3.0-3.5A@1.8-2.2V to meet rated output power. Obviously not all diodes are created equal so there is some margin for error in there! :)

I get 3W with 3.8A at 2.8V (actually not sure what it was now) pushing it as close to the Ophir as I can without the top piece.
I get 1.5 with that top piece that screws on and has a small hole in the top.
I get about 2.3W with the aluminum back half of a regular module with the back opened up so it is just a tube.
It makes more sense now as it just spreads way out and only half goes down the housing tube that screws on and the rest hits the inside of it. Basically need a lens mounted right up to the output hole like any other diode. Don't know why the mount comes with that barrel then as it's deceiving making you think it all goes down the hole.
So yes, I'm meeting rated power and nothing is wrong;) I lost my mind for a minute with that mounting tube.
IT did take 5A but now I'm chicken to try it again and see what I get. Any idea how much they can be pushed?

EDIT:
Tried it and I get about 4W at 5A and 3V:) Not putting it on the 10A power supply though unless someone knows for sure how much these can usually take;)

Sorry Styro if I got a bit off topic. Don't see much talk of c-mounts and when you posted I decided it was time to put mine together.
Will say that it isn't hard to do at all and there are several different types being sold on Ebay from China of course.

I'm blaming this on turning 51 yesterday:D. Give me a bit of a break though as I knew nothing about 808nm or c-mount stuff and since the mount came with that nose piece I was thinking it wasn't going to block the output. Don't follow the blind man.....
