I built this laser myself! Thanks to RedCowboy for suggesting the name "Little Giant" on the LPF thread for my first video of this laser.

That ping-pong ball was completely unexpected. Previous (and following) attempts failed to achieve anything like it.

Music is Mozart's 'Eine kleine Nachtmusik', royalty free.

Love the 405, superb beam quality.
If I had cash to burn I would make a ring of a dozen all aimed into a cone then use a double concave and a PCX lens to group a bundle and converge at variable distances.

Thanks everyone! The video has been licensed to Break.com now and I've made a fair bit of money from it. This one laser has paid for itself 3 times now! :D

On August 3, 2016, this laser's life was tragically ended. A ping-pong ball with which I was experimenting exploded early and with unusual force, causing rocks to fly out. My hands were injured in the explosion and the laser was destroyed.

Edit: now that I know your ok other than loosing a thumb nail in time and some surely sore fingers, what actually happened to the laser?

When the ping-pong ball exploded it threw the rocks that were under it a great distance, turning them into projectiles.

The laser - being very close to the ping-pong ball - was struck by rocks, HARD. Impact destroyed the diode, lens, and even the battery.

What was in the ping-pong ball? :O Surely the ping-pong ball didn't explode on its own?

I didn't want to reveal my methods until my next video - it was going to be about exploding ping-pong balls. This one was filled with flash paper, but it was packed so thoroughly that it exploded violently.

There was a fuse on it - a longer fuse than the last one - but it was vertical. I believe a spark flew from it once I ignited it, which landed at the bottom of the fuse and ignited the flashpaper early.

Ahhh - so basically a 19th century billiard ball? Got it! :D Sounds like fun ... well ... if it hadn't broken your laser and messed up your hand.

For anyone not in the loop ... billiard balls used to be made of Nitrocellulose - the same stuff as flash paper. Urban legend has it that rough play would sometimes cause them to explode.

Anyway - yes - that sounds likely. Seal around the fuse next time and ensure you are a reasonable distance from the ball. I used to use hot-glue for sealing. Things that aren't normally very explodey (Yes, that's a made up word...) tend to get much more explodey when packed into a confined space... Black powder being another fine example. :beer:

Wow, glad you are all right sta. Even though I'm not really into burning I do watch others videos and you did a great job with that one. Again, glad you are OK and sorry about the loss of your laser:(

I sure am. I have about $800 coming my way from video sales and refunds; I'll use some of it to buy a Sanwu Challenger II 405nm and a beam expander. I'm going to try for two Guinness World Records with it once my injuries are healed. :)
