A blu-ray diode actually turned blue

It turned blue at the very moment it died. :p If you were there in person you would have seen an obvious color change. I just thought I should post it because its was so weird.

This reminds me of when I fried an IR diode today. I was overpowering a small greenie pump diode with 400mA and I was burning some stuff with in when it suddenly became visible as a dark red through my goggles. Then it died. ;D

it looked like 600mA instant death I'd say. that was just silly to do to a 405nm diode, it's called 405nm because it doesn't do well at 473nm (blue).

It was already dead. ;) I do think that the HEAT was what made it blue (also COMPLETELY killed it). :p
It was lasing though. ::) I was surprised that its wires could even handle that kind of current. :eek:

Thats weird because heat usually makes its wavelength higher right. :-?

I could see it started getting "bluer" at 500ma's and the module will burn you if you touch it.

LOL... Why is everybody freaking out? I mean it was ALREADY DEAD and did not lase at normal currents so I decided to see what would happen to it at such high currents.

Hm. Perhaps hook up a TEC (hot side) and elevate the temperature of a functioning diode, leaving it at 100ma or so
see what happens! :p

I wish cameras could pick this stuff up better. It just looks like it got dimmer at the end.

Its a common theme with laser diodes - when they heat up, the wavelength goes up. It happens too with red diodes running hot, which makes them look just as red, but less bright.

Blu ray is on the edge of the visible spectrum, longer wavelengths will make it more visible and more blue. Running at high temperature is likely to kill your diodes quickly though, so there is little practical application for this effect.

You want to HEAT the diode to make it blue! :eek: Thats crazy, maybe crazy enough to work! I have an unusable diode and just got my peltiers. I'll run the diode at a very LOW power like 20-35ma's and see if it works. I had to give the diode a LOT of power before it started to lase anything at all and really I doubt I could do this without destroying the diode. :-/

if you look at a burnt out blu-ray diode strait on and move it around at different angles you can see blue reflections and violet reflections.
