I'd love to use that laser here.:eg:

Do you have the optics to fix the divergence?

Lase

That would be just EVIL!... If you can pick a spot above the spectators, and with a building with no windows on the other side.... would be a hell of a lot of fun. Can you imagine people freaking out with the balloons popping en mass:evil:

yes but CO2 laser diverge terribly :)

Where do you get this info from? My CO2 laser manages to keep a tighter beam over distance than 445. Granted, the beam starts out bigger to begin with, but the divergence isn't bad at all.

Please keep the dangers in mind if you are looking at these lasers. The power of the laser itself is only a small worry compared to the high voltage and water requirements they need.

yes, you're right, I had this idea after numerous experiments with lenses. But normally co2 lasers have a divergence of about 1.7 - 2 mrad, so not bad :)

I wonder if the balloons were more transparent in the IR wavelength than one would think. Things can be very different at 10,000-odd nm or so. Just like how the world looks very different under 800-900nm light when viewed under a night vision photomultiplier or a CCD/CMOS camera using "night shot" mode.

Black fabrics can look "white" etc. things transparent under visible wavelengths are opaque, you can see right through certain fabrics etc.

I just had a look. See for yourself. This would explain why they sometimes pop out of order.

Hey personally, I'd like to see if a CO2 laser could initiate an Acetylene and Oxygen balloon from a distance. That'd be really awesome. My guess is it would be a real challenge.... hell why not try it.

I would start with just an Acetylene balloon.

I would NEVER mix Oxygen, or even just regular old 18% O2 "air" with Acetylene unless I had remote valves and everything rigged up.

I would rather play with Cobalt 60 and no lead shielding for a few minutes.

You could rig a clear balloon filled with 50% butane or so an have a flash paper tied to a string in the middle, remote balloon bombs? that'll be one of my first videos...
