Balloons? I L-O-V-E balloon popping. So nice. Great, great and perfect. Where is the balloon popping?

Do you think Lucasfilms will try to sue the military now? Lol

Is that some sort of beam I'm seeing in the video, or just a really straight throw of smoke?

I think a straight trail of smoke. Then it (the fuel or the air or something) lights on fire or something. The drone is moving pretty quickly. You can kind of see the dot from the laser on the drone though which is cool

Great find! That Phalanx system is pretty impressive all-around. On a nuke-powered carrier that thing could just keep on beaming from target to target. I'd hate to think what would happen to a manned aircraft... with 32kW, getting blinded would be just the beginning of the horror.

On basically any carrier this thing could keep beaming from target to target.

And I think (I'm not sure) that it's an IR laser.. so if by chance it didn't blind you you would just notice parts of your plane melting away before your very eyes! Kinda creepy...

Probably. I just assumed it would melt a mirror because I once saw a video of a <5kW laser cutting a mirror.

For a standard mirror coating, that isn't so surprising. If you assume 90% reflection then 500W would still get through to the backing which would be enough to burn through thin steel.

On the other hand, modern dieletric coatings can reflect 99.99% +. If it were possible to coat a drone with something like that, then even 100kw isn't going to do much, especially on a moving target many hundreds of meters away!

But I guess the military have thought of all that ;-)

Great video! Now that could be panned back and forth in a malaria mosquito infested area and take out millions of the nasty creatures after a few passes. At a cost of only $1.00 per mosquito. Oh well, that's millions of dollars to take out those mosquitoes. Back to the drawing board.

For those who don't know (and I don't know if this is what you were referring to :p) Intellectual Ventures is on it!
