Build your own box if you have the time and money, finding a host box for a custom scanner is easier said than done as I found out. Norms DAC seams quite good, or if you want to go really cheap try laserboy.

100mW of which colour? Does it have TTL/Analoge modulation?

its a 100mw green .. im prolly buying a new one the one i have is a portable (not a pen but a flashlight) and i dont think i want to be running a show off a battery :) i could convert it i think, but its easier to but a new one.. i will go with green to start (cost effective)...

I can build the case no problem.. im good with that stuff...

got links for the dacs?

100mW of green is more than enough, that will be fine for something the size of a 2 car garage or a small hall.

The first thing I learnt when I went into laser shows is that pointers of any kind are not designed to be used for shows at all. The first thing you will notice if you point a laser pointer at the galvos is everything will be joined together, imagine drawing a smily face on a piece of paper but you cant take the pen off the paper, thats what your effect will look like.

I would seriously recommend getting a module. Your kit should have some kind of display controler board which a TTL connection will simply turn your laser on and off incredibly quickly and in a certain pattern for each effect. Smiley face without TTL will show lines connecting the eyes, nose mouth etc. A smiley face with TTL will show the outer line of the face, the eyes, nose and mouth correctly without any lines connecting them at all.

Google Norm's DAC on google, you will find it.

ok im gonna get norms dac i think... and can i buy an empty module and use my own diode and driver?

In theory yes.

A module is basically a fairly large heat sink with diode and optics inside connected to a larger driver board which usually has the PSU built onto it as well and TTL inputs on it.

You can easily get a cheapy one from DealExtreme, I think they have TTL and I dont see why you cant simply rip out the cheap diodes and put a nice powerful one in there. I am not really the person to ask about that side to it but reading on this forum, different powered diodes need different milliamps to output that power.

I bought a 50mW green module from DL for £120 for my custom scanner.

well i guess ill just bone up and buy a second real laser..

I belive thats the best thing to do.

You can get a 50mW green module from DL for around £120. Going on last time I looked at these, ebay sells 100 - 200mW red lasers for around £70 and you can get a 5mw - 10mw blue (473nm) laser module for about £500 - £600.

If I remember right you have two sets of galvos right? Your going to need two lasers, one for each galvo? Perhaps buy a 200mw red and a 50mw green. I might be wrong about two galvo sets, I am at work so I havent looked at the kit you bought since this morning.

Ah yup, your right. Thats just 1 laser, although you can add more to it but it does get a little complicated.

What colour laser are you looking for? Obviously green is the most visible.
