Jeez I take an (unplanned) laser vacation from lasers for a couple weeks and come back to this? Great.

Yeah... Check out the SC DAC section... I just got a nice "present" from Gary because he basically screwed us over (I can't think of a better way to put it)..

After I said all that good stuff about his software and told a bunch of people to buy it.

EDIT: LtKp - You're also GUILTY of buying Spaghetti and not making shows for it immediately! Being hospitalized is no excuse!

This is also why gaming and high end software is often now tied with other things (like dongles or internet connections.) The apple II was one of the first and companies/individuals lost millions to illegal copying on it, hasn't stopped since.

I don't blame him. But, for those who bought it legitamately, he ought to support it for at least a couple years.

Do you know that the code on the machine can be changed right?
But thats a whole different topic there.
That will not be talked about openly.

I guess Gary got pissed because someone suggested a "hack" to change the GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) on their computer to run Spaghetti using someone else's license without paying for it. I am sure he had other reasons as well, he must get a ton of support requests from people needing help to install it. I know that when first got my copy it would not run properly and he was kind enough to help me out...

This was a stupid comment made by a member.. I am pretty sure everyone who uses Spaghetti has paid for it....

This is what I got from Gary when I asked why he basically revoked our rights to new software:

A lot of people own Spaghetti and there have been many opportunities for people to make shows and share them. That's why Spaghetti was made available to the public in the first place. None of you have really done anything to give to the Spaghetti community. Why should I?

On a similar vein, this is another "we're better than they are and we don't like them" kind of stuff that shouldn't happen, BUT DOES.

I get annoyed when some start assuming things.

Laser pointer posts

Love does not flow from the Projectors to the pointer. Too bad. People learn a lot from sharing info!

Wow. Just read the SC DAC thread. What a load of shit. I'm glad there's a way you can hack your license file which I will do when I upgrade machines to use the software I paid for.

There's no published way to do it and I didn't even look into it because I thought I was getting decent software for my money.

EDIT: I don't know exactly what he has up his ass but I didn't do or say anything prior to this that should have set him off that _I_ should be "punished" for.

I don't get it either. I understand why he locks his software they way he does but not making a way to invalidate it on one machine and move it to another is silly.

He said he usually accommodates people if they do a hardware upgrade or whatever and tell him they removed it.. And I think that's backed by users who have done it before...

That still have absolutely nothing to do with why he's not offering upgrades or future sales according to him.

Retiring from Spaghetti

"Some idiot from LPF" I think we all know who that is.
They site seem to hate LPF over there at PL.

from Photon Lexicon thread said:
Also, don't forget that most of the lasers we use as 'display' lasers were harvested by the pointer geeks to begin with... so in essence, they are a good source of knowledge and torturing the crap out of vulnerable, expensive laser diodes, so we can use the rest of them in their "Maximum Operating Conditions" as estabilished and make pretty pictures

That was the reason the whole C4$10 riot started in the first place. People harvested the Nichias to burn holes in stuff, not to make pretty laser shows first.
So, they don't respect LPF, but use us for testing and diode harvesting. Perfect :p

After some thought, I have decided not to completely abandon Spaghetti but things will be different. I'm sure that I may have lost some customers from my quick decision to abandon it but that's life. For those remaining and/or future customers I will immediately address the first two nagging issues:

(0) Price will immediately be dropped to $89.

(1) Sound card DACs - I will not offer any type of support and no one will receive sympathy from me if they can't get theirs configured properly. However, I will be creating and releasing a FREE sound card DAC utility that will allow tuning and testing with a hard coded test pattern so that noobs can stop blaming Spaghetti when they don't properly configure their soundcard.

(2) I will start charging a small fee for creating replacement license files. The first will be free for the same computer. Subsequent licenses will be something like $5. Transfering to a different computer or to a different person might be a larger fee. This is not set in stone, yet. However, this will be temporary since I will immediately switch to a dongle.

I welcome comments, suggestions, complaints, etc.

Just packed up my bags and left PL for that reason. It has reached the point where there is more bitching there than here, quite disappointing really. Oh well.

Yup, I complained about it in the lounge forum, wouldn't surprise me if it was deleted.

EDIT: No need for more negativity. Suffice it to say that LPF has, throughout all adversity, continued it's legacy of experimentation, education and innovation, even to the benefit of it's detractors. I think that's pretty sweet!
