Running Pangolin on a minimalist setup

For 2013-2014, I have an art project that I'm considering building using a few RGB PJs running Pangolin QS. The catch: It's a small mobile platform used in a remote and very dusty environment.

As such.. there's no way that I'm bringing a quad core i7 laptop out there to run it.

I do see that they're quoting minimal HD requirements as being a dual core processor and 2GB of RAM.. ouch.

What's the cheapest, most minimal way that anyone has run QS out there?

Any insight is welcome.

EDIT: The more I look at options, the more I may go RIYA.. thoughts?

As I wrote you.. I dont think what you have in mind is possible- QS runs only on a computer with the Pango DAC (FB 3)- that DAC works with no other software except Pangolin BEYOND and no other DAC will work with QS. Get with ChipDouglas- he just returned from BM and did some stuff with lasers there. Also you could contact jeff again- I want to go to the next one too. To be completely portable i may build a few MINI Lumia RGB PJs that run on 12vdc from a 18650 battery pack- it would be a sealed set-up so no way for dust to enter. handhelds may be an option but beams would not be easy to see without fog or smoke- abstracts and some flying skrims are what I am thinking about.

Good luck--- Len

Yeah.. I'm coming to the conclusion that Pango isn't the way to go in this case. The more I read about RIYA products and their DAC lites, the more i'm very curious about them.

There's a way.. oh yes.. there is always a way. Just trying to conceptualize the project now in order to make the best expenditures.

I'm dead set on using 3 of those LK 1W machines.. I never do anything half way. :eg:

We can talk about the 2,440 LED wearable light suit sometime..

ALSO - Great read about how another member dust proofed his PJ for outside use!

"This is going to sound crude, but i took a wet cheese cloth and made a kind of tent around the projector...taping it firmly around the opening and front body, while making an 18" or so high, and 2' long "tented" area around the back of it with the damp cheese cloth and a wire cage thingy from an old bird-cage. I put it all on a piece of clean plywood, and tucked the bottom of the "tent" under the bottom of it. Mine was crude, but i think with some more time and care, you could make a very clean looking "cage", taking special care to make sure it extends up and out the back far enough so that, when it's covered in damp cheese cloth, it will still be enough area to allow for proper air flow....plus, it seemed to me that the air pulled through the damp cloth was cooler as well. I can't remember which size cloth i used (it was just one i had), but you would want the biggest holes that will still provide a barrier when damp. All i'm sayin is...my PJ did not seem to take on any dust, but the cloth was filthy by the end of the night. I'm sure there are better ways to do it, but this worked for me...for one 4hour session in the high-desert moonlight. Obviously, you don't want the cloth so wet that it drips...i just had a fine-mist sprayer handy, and sprayed it from the outside a few times."

as you say there is always a way--

never though about moisened filter- instead of a tent I gave thiught to a plexiglass box. to serve thge same function- thise tiny 12 vdc Kasio fans pull a lot of air and they are plentiful DTR is almost giving them away as each A sereis kasio comes with four of them. having filters on the actual PJ plus a second set of them on the enclosure IMO would be the best way to go as long as the filters get cleaned or replaced often. I use those green scrubbies they seller for cleaning dishes made by 3M iirc. I double them up and they do a good job without slowing down the flow very much- ez to clean and they will last forever--

hope to see some pics from you showing how you end up protecting your Pjs from the desert dust.

I thought the same thing about the plexiglass box.. but at that point, all you're doing is duplicating the existing case for the PJ. You would be better served to directly build a filter for the intake fan instead of a redundant case.

A couple years ago it ran on my ancient 1.1GHz pentium 3 laptop with half-gig of ram. I didn't use it more than a few minutes, so I can't really say how well it ran... but it ran.

I've run it on my EEEPC too (1.6Ghz 2GB RAM), however that was way back when it was first released, they've added a whole lot more features which might make it unusable.
