Need help with terminal strip

Well iv been chattin it up with The Muffin Man, and hes really been helpin me out with understand how to put together everything needed for a laser show.

i mean this guy described things so well to me it made me feel stupid when i finally realized what he was talking about.

even when i got annoying and very confused, he would stop explaining till i completely understood it.

which, soon enough, i did. =] so thanks a bunch The Muffin Man =]
Unfortunately, the only thing i really had trouble understanding was the terminal strip used to add to the power plug to power everything.

what i dont understand is the terms "live" and "neutral" because apparently there is an AC strip and a 12v strip?
also, i just dont understand how to connect the power supplies to the terminals and how to connect the terminals to the prongs.

so if anyone can help me with this problem that would be great!

Neutral refers to the grounded side of your mains and live referers to the other side are you in the US.
if your terminal strip has a wire going to the chassis or ground that would be whare you would connect the neutral side from the mains.
A picture would make this a lot easier and safer when messing with the mains !

thanks that actually did clear a few things up but im still confused on how to attach them to the prongs on the power plug. i agree a picture would really help.

Can't you just cut the head off a extention cord and use the wires to connect to the power? is this what you are asking.... if so then just cut the wire and attach it as pyro said... simple

well, when i spoke with muffin man, he told me that the terminal strip is used to connect the laser psu, the scanner psu, and the fan psu to each of the terminals, then soldering them to the prongs on the back of this power plug IEC Fuse Chassis Male Power Plug with Switch - Jaycar Electronics

but i dont know which prongs go to the terminal strip. and if im supposed to screw the psu's into any of the terminals.

ohhhh I see.... I live in australia and the config for the power point is:

Left: active
Right: Neutral
Middle: ground

In your country the configuration may be different. If you know the config for your powerpoint, you can use a DMM to trace the wires.. use the DMM in Ohm mode and put the one probe on the positive pin (the one that goes into the powerpoint) and then put the other probe in the end of the wire (one going into the psu etc..)... if you get a reading that is the positive pin (repeat for other 2).

NP's man happy to help... what are you confused about? the prongs? in America the powerpoints are differnt, not sure if you have a middle pin like we do....

ya exactly. im just not totally sure which psus go into which terminal and then how to connect that terminal strip to the prongs on the plug. muffin man also told me i need 4 terminal strips, but i just dont understand why.

Hi,

we talked and I tried to explain things.

Once you know the pinout of the power plug you will know which is live and which is neutral. You will have a wire coming from the live to one terminal strip which will be the "live" terminal and you will do the same for neutral.

All of the the things that run on AC (scanner psu, green laser, and psu for your fans) will have live and neutral. Just hook em up.

Your power supply for the fans will "input" AC and "output" DC. The +/- from the output will go to two terminal strips (+/-). Hook your fans up to the DC terminal strips.

You will also have to "daisy-chain" all of your terminal strips. Someone else should explain this because I'm not totally sure how to.

Just be absolutely sure that you NEVER connect any of the delicate parts to the main.

120 volts AC will incinerate your diode in a nanosecond flat.

Not sure why anyone would "daisy chain" multiple strips with different voltages, I would keep the 120 (mains) strip as far away from the low voltage strips as possible.

Insulate and cover any open connections that lead to your house outlet power (mains)

Okay, now im a little scared of even touching it.
Maybe Ill send it to someone to do it for me. Just that part, with the terminal strip and the prongs on the power plug.
