Lumia Effect

Currently working on RGV build and I am looking for any info on the lumia effect....how to trigger it and remove it...where to get components...The Glass ...any help would be appreciated.

Well what I was thinking was to use some either servo motors or rotary solenoids to place a mirror in the beam path - which would redirect the laser beam onto the lumina glass disk. Rotating the disk isn't a big issue, just need a low rpm motor which can be obtained from several online places.

Ah right, I was thinking along the right lines then. I have done something similar myself just by slowly moving about a piece of shiny black plastic in front of my laser.

All you should need is a slow moving motor to fix it to.

It would be a nice effect to capture with an RGB projector. Too bad I only have a 350mW RGB and that might not melt the plastic. Oh well, soon enough I will have a 1 Watt RGB.

The regular lumina effect is generated by shining a laser through a piece of textured glass which is slowly rotated. Melting plastic isn't exactly the best way to create the display for a show system

Melting plastic is definitely going to be the most efficient way to get this effect with minimal loss of laser output though ;D j/k

True but melting plastic is the easiest way, how much plastic do you have compared to textured glass in your house?

I did mine with a 50mW green module so 350mW will definatly be enough. I need a power meter as I think my 50mW is putting out double that but if I can do it with a rated 50mW then you will definatly be able to do it with 350mW.

Never mind, the voltage is way to high for clock motors.

I guess I'll just have to use my rechargeable crank flashlights mechanism.

Some of the best effects can be created with a set of scanners and a lumia wheel. If you have an RGB or RGV projector, you can seperate the colors prior to reaching the lumia wheel which can create some really neat effects. Here's a pic of an old G-120 scan head that has several scan through "pop in" effects. These effects were pnumatic, however rotary solenoids work just as well. The lumia wheel on this scan head is belt driven to turn by a hankscraft dc motor.
