ok, i work at maplin electronics - for those of you who are from england, you will know we stock various disco lighting and equipment and stuff..

well, the other day we got a laser crab in stock, so i decided to have a look at it.

wow!! its surprisingly simple!, so it got me thinking.

if i get 2 motors and a green laser, some potentiometers*... could i make my own?

*potentiometers would need to be able to change the polarity of the current at mid point for the motors to go both clockwise and anticlockwise.

when im nect in, i shall take some pictures, and hopefully tomorrow i will have some plans drawn out.

Ben: That would work fine. My homemade XY scanner was ripped of of a laser light show thingie. I removed the module and bored open the casing to allow me to line up any laser into the mirror cavity, I have a pot on each motor, but I cannot reverse the polarity and make them spin the other way.

But it works well and I can get some nice effects. This was a couple of picture Merl took, last time we tried it out, power was about 250mW (when the spyder11 behaved) ;)

In order to reverse the polarity of the DC motors, and make them spin the other way, you can use a series of reed switches, and iwth the flick of a switch (or two) you can reverse the direction of the motors. Take a peek on Intructables.com, and do a search for reed switches - it goes into great detail, as well as plenty of plans :)

you can do it with a pot, but it can get complcated that way. i would do as greg said, and use reed switches. disco lighting?? i love that kinda stuff! ;)

In considering an counterclockwise motor rotation you have to make sure they're not brush motors too because then the cavity inside would burn out and it might as well be a poorly spinning paperweight.

very cheap, these scanners will do every beam show you throw at them, simple graphics and simple animations.

worth every penny
