I have also tried this. Just at home on my projector though, I haven't gone out and done it in public. good fun!

this is actually the reason i got my greeny ;D ;D lol its pretty much awesome

I did it at a festival last summer, we projected on a big concrete building (30x40 meters maybe?) using a 12000 lumen projector, a DV camera and this computer (Dell 2ghz laptop). The pointers used were 30mW DX.
It is a very easy program to control once you get everything set up!
