Ok, yes I know im going to get a load of replys telling me to get a controller but that doesn't do what I want it to do. I need a USB DMX that I can simply plug into my computer and do whatever I want with it instead of spending hours to sort out one effect, not to mention on a normal controller how can you get text?

So does anyone know where I can get a cheap USB DMX controler? All I can find on google are ones that are in between £60 and £300.

I have the Enttec DMX USB pro. It controls my Lanling -16RGY ok but I don't think it can be fast enough for graphics.. Lets wait for Things to reply to this.

The main graphics I will want to use it for is letters really, so I can project words or numbers onto a wall. The other times will be beam effects.

DMX is mainly for controlling preset patterns, you cannot send your own graphics to he laser with it. DMX is mainly for lighting in theatres and dj's to control them. I have a light here that is DMX capable, and i can choose what pattern it does, and what colour it does, and where it moves, really cool! But for a graphics laser, you will need a DAC, or some ILDA thing.

You will need ILDA or even better, if you want real nice control, a USB I/O kit so you can directly modulate the analog 5V to the galvo amps and lasers.

Sorry to say it, but unless you pay $3000 for a ILDA system and software, you ain't gonna get something you can just type text into.

and then what are you gonna hook the DMX output to? the DMX board. That s not gonna help mate, its just a DMX USB link...

If you ACTUALLY bought a DAC capable of giving analog 0-5V output, then you could hook it to galvo amps and laser drivers, but recommending a DAC and linking to what he has said, and you agreed he DOES NOT WANT is pretty useless.

As said above you just told me about everything and its not what I am looking for.

There are USB DMX links that come with software, you can see all the preset effects as someone said but you can do simple things like adding words to it so I can at least project something like 'merry xmas' onto a wall.

FokoP directly answered the question you asked:
"So does anyone know where I can get a cheap USB DMX controler? All I can find on google are ones that are in between £60 and £300."

"As said above you just told me about everything and its not what I am looking for. "

If that is not the question you wanted answered you may need to rephrase it and tell us what you are looking for.

Dam! try helping out and I just get poo'd on. DMX is only a trigger system that triggers presets on the DMX controller board.

And I did give you a link to a company that sells them, they are not cheap, that is why i suggested getting a DAC( I know thats not what you want ) but you can do so much more with it. Norm's DAC only costs $23 and the software is free, cheap and it works.

So take my advice or leave it, it is just a suggestion :p

Ok so a DAC works basically the same way by making a connection from the DMX to the computer? and it does more or less what I want?

A DAC WILL NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH DMX. THERE IS NO WAY TO INPUT CUSTOM PATTERNS OVER DMX.

If you buy a DAC, you could do that, however you need to also have a scanner capable of recieving the DAC.

yep, DMX WILL ONLY LET YOU SELECT BETWEEN THE PRESET PATTERNS!! A dac will do much much more in the term of lasers. I have DMX, i know!
