i would bargain to say that this is not a spyrograph or anything like that. I donno but it looks like to me to be nothing but a light show with a revolving "defraction grating"

Correct.

There's quite a few of these around recently with powers going up to 500mW on eBay. Thing is I don't really think they are worth the money. I have never looked inside them but from what I know they just have diffraction gratings inside and if you look at the picture of the back of the unit it has speed control for the motors holding the gratings.

To be honest you can get a cheap scanner for slightly more and it will do similar effects plus more.

I actually have a similar SHINP unit (TL218) and have built a very similar effect here at the house just for fun - Ken's 100% correct, it's basically a static diffraction grating and 2 low-speed motors turning in oppsite directions (or depending on sound activation, the same direction) with diffraction gratings - gives a pretty cool "fireflies" effect on the walls, ceiling, floor, etc but after passing through all those gratings the beams are ultra-tiny and barely visible, even with fog ...

Cool projection effect, though - and the SHINP unit (also 50mW green/100mW red) is distributor priced at $135 plus shipping, so the DX unit is (if up to spec, etc) priced pretty well IMHO

Not a bad price just for the laser modules but they are probably junk.

Yep. The red would most likely be just a diode in a mount, and the green would be a cheapy. I doubt they would have modulation either, cause it's not needed in such a device (Though you may be able to get away with it if you used a flexmod or something)

It's a cool effect, but it's not really classified as a scanner, as it doesnt scan be the beam, just splits it a couple of hundred times via 1 or 2 spinning diffraction gratings.

Things with scanners is they are NOT CHEAP! Get something cheap, and it will most likely be crap. If you don't have the money to buy atleast a decent pair of galvo's, then your gonna struggle also buying a laser module, DAC(Anywhere from ~$200 to $4000, the exception is the sound card DAC, and it works, but I wouldnt really consider it a "proffesional" DAC due to various reasons) and the case/alu plate :p

BlueFusion and I are working on a DAC that me be under $100 and of very reasonable quality, but that is a while off yet.

I'm betting on no modulation and no yellow. I would be surprised to find any beam-combinig going on in there..

Howdy Mr. BCM

I'm new to building solid state lasers, but I got my first mels groit hene in the early 80s.

my question to you is why you stated the SF-AW's are crap. I know nothing, thats why I ask, thanks.

Because they are. :) They are not a true 6x diode and they have a high price for what they are

Greetings, Pyro, and thanks for answering, Iskor ... I have a bad taste over those diodes because a few members here jumped the gun and were selling supposed "6X" blu-ray builds using those diodes before the full gamut of tests had been run on them, and a lot of unsuspecting buyers ended up with expensive blu-ray pointers that aren't what they were advertised as. The GGW diodes are the "true" 6X diode, with real 6X capabilities and reliability (OMG now I sound like a chinese website, "true"... LMAO).

Anyhow, the SF-AW's ended up being extensively tested with terrible consistancy and overall poor results (search the threads and you'll see the results yourself) while the GGW's IMHO Rock - I've got a couple of them running 200mW and they're going strong after many hours of use and abuse, and I'm not the only one.

Hope my humble opinion helped answer your ????s!
