I know NOTHING, but...

currently my wife is hand engraving text (with a wood burner - similar to a soldering iron) we want to replace her manual method with an engraver

I am just reading and learning about laser engravers... I see 500mW engravers on eBay and elsewhere - looking at this http://www.ebay.com/itm/500MW-DIY-l...d=100167&rk=3&rkt=15&mehot=pp&sd=161640264295

I am looking for an engraver to do at least 6" x 6" to engrave in 3/16" hobby ply.

is 500mW enough power?
what "color" laser do I need?

any recommendations would be GREAT!!!

500mw is enough power depending on how fast the laser is programmed to move, and lower wavelengths are best like blue or purple. But I would stay away from a seller like that. Looks like he used MSpaint to make it look like he used the engraver to put his ebay name on the phone, very misleading.

Yup. The font looks like bolded italic JAF Bernina Sans.

Don't buy from people who do this kind of thing. It's called false advertising.
