Longtime lurker, first time poster. Please don't bite my head off.

This is not mine (yes, I know I could be lying seeing as this is my first post and all, but take my word for it).

I was bouncing around ebay and found this absolutely titanic Nd:glass slab. I don't even want to think how much pump energy it would take to get this thing going (or how much energy you could get out of it). Apparently it came from the National Ignition Facility.

Apparently I'm not allowed to post links, I swear I'm not spamming

Hey, I just did some calculations to figure how much energy this thing could provide. I assumed that it would put out power proportional to its volume. Based on the energy output of a known Nd:glass laser, it looks like this thing could provide over 2kJ of light (provided you have enough pump energy and your resonant mirrors are smoking slag at that point)

WOW!

I used to have this neighbor who would always drive around his neighborhood in his souped up mustang. I wonder what kind of damage* this laser would do?

*yes I know, above all, do no harm with your laser

EDIT: For those who want to know, I calculated that it'd be 2306J output

Wild Ass Guess --- That plate is doped between 5 and 8% !!

What the hell are they doing out there
