Hi everyone. I saw this deal on Newegg this morning. It cost as the title says and has free shipping!!!

This looked like a good deal to me but I had a question about the manufacturer.
It is made by ASUS. Has anyone had any experience with these? I know most people use the Pioneer.

Here is the link: Newegg.com - ASUS 8X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Drive Model BC-08B1ST

I was hoping to get some opinions on the off brand before I spent the money.

ASUS is not an "off-brand". Though I'm not sure we use laser diodes from their products, they are very well known for their great quality in laptops, motherboards, LCDs, and many other computer parts. I would think it would be a good quality diode, but that is just based off of their equipment not usually failing.

If others know otherwise though, don't hesitate to give information. I don't want to be responsible for convincing him to buy a bad diode, but I personally would thinkk it would be good.

Edit: I'm using one of their laptops right now -lower class - and it's GREAT... never failed once.

SECOND MAJOR EDIT - It is NOTTTT a burner. It is just a 8x reader. Thus, I doubt it's anything worth getting for that much $$ if your trying to make a portable laser with it. For a reader for your computer - if that's what you're looking for, you didn't specify, then it's probably fine. But for diode use, DONT get it.

I meant it is an off-brand as far as the diodes we use goes, not as a company, sorry for the confusion.

@yobresal, My bad for opening a thread on what I thought was a great deal and wanting to get some opinions of some more experienced members out there, sorry to bother you.

Thank you to everyone for your replies.

@Dave, thanks for the clarification, I missed that.

So to all, my apologies for opening this thread, it seems a waste of sever space, please delete it.

It's all good Kev, It is pretty much a right of passage at this point. I find it more humorous than anything else. I don't think anyone has actually purchased one of these readers drives on accident yet and probably because they posted here first before pulling the trigger. So It is a good think you posted here first. Imagine if you hadn't. Could have been very dissapointing.

It happens. No biggie.

Also, the thread should be left up to help the next member that sees the "good deal" without realizing it is a reader.

It happens more than you realize (hence Yobresal's and my comments ;) )

Dieselmarine burned up several LG CH08's (also a reader) before he posted to figure out why he kept blowing the diodes

Thanks for your comments guys. When I saw the sale I kinda just focused on 8X BR!!! and the price!!! Completely looked over the ROM part. :banghead:

@yobresal, yeah, I am glad I posted it because that would have been $70 down the drain that could go to a REAL 8X from Dave ;)

I know what you mean though. I felt the same way when all the Artic threads started. Now the "Discussion" Artic thread seems to have turned into a chatroom :pop: :)
